So, does anyone know of a really good filter to use on a standard "transfer pump" filter head?

I am talking about the standard filters that all gas station pumps have on them, and contractors use on their pick-up mounted fuel transfer tanks and pumps.

I went to my local "pump and meter" store, and they has 10 micron GAS filters and 30 micron DIESEL filters with the water drain. They looked it up and were able to order me some 10 micron DIESEL filters with the water drain on them....I think they are CIM-TEK filters.

back during the 2008 gas crunch, I ordered up the then popular PERMA-COOL 1 micron filter and filter head. The perma cool filter head looks better, as do the filters, as they actually have a elongated nipple on the filter head, that is smooth, and a coresponding rubber seal in the filter, to make sure no fluid bypasses the filter by going around the threads.

I am worried the MADE IN CHINA perma cool filters aren't top quality, and would like to use a 5 micron or less filter in when transfering my W85 from drums, to my truck..

Thoughts?
Part numbers?

Try Baldwin Filters | Home for cross reference, once you know what fits your filter head then you can search around there and find a filter you like. I've ordered some filters for my 6.9 that are nearly twice as tall as the factory filter. More capacity equals less restriction and longer filter life. It took me awhile but I did get it figured out base on gasket dimension and thread size.

thanks for the ref....

I have been searching CIM-TEK online catalog, and I think I found a 2 micron filter that will fit my head.....a 250 series filter.....I will cross that to Baldwin too.

How do you know when a water block filter is no good any more? I have a sediment bowl style 20 micron at the beginning of my filter series but it has a drain on it. I know when enough sediment gets in it'll stop working but I was just curious if the water-block part can become bad before then? Or do you just drain any water from the bowl and its recharged as long as oil will still go through?

The water block filter should slow when it's blocked by water. As long as your not running a waster seperator filter element. I change mine out every 6 months even if it still flows. I get them for around $7.00 and the cim-tek for $9.00. So thats $16.00 for 6 months or $32.00 a year. So far this has worked for me. I do clean my oil well i use a centrifuge and get it down to 1/2 micron. Everyones experience may be different due to how clean/dewatered your oil/mix is.

I asked this also in another thread but wanted to get some more opinions. Is there any kind of flamability issue holding w85 in a diesel transfer tank mounted in my truck? Since these tanks are only rated for diesel, will the 15% gas be a problem?

IT will likely only be ans issue if you tell someone that there is gas in there....otherwise, I would use your head.....Put a Pre-vent type cap on the tank so it holds a few inches of Mercury of both pressure and vaccum before it vents. (minimize venting under low pressures and vaccums)

By the way, in response to the Original Topic, I ended up settling on a Hydraulic Fluid filter, a very large one with a Beta ratio of 75 for 3micron particles.

I found that very few if any Fuel Transfer filters are rated for anything more than NOMINAL ratings.
