Well, suprisingly little damage considering the abuse I put it through. And considering the investment I have in it, makes it even better.

The OD clutch pack looked like the two stages of NOS at the drag strip wasn't its favorite thing, but not worn enough to worry about it. Fluid looked and smelled good, and minor sediment in the pan-nothing on the magnetic drain plug.

The new converter lauching at 30 PSI in 4X4 created an interesting dilema when we tried to remove the direct clutch pack-they wouldn't come off by hand. Had to pound them off with a hammer-no wear other than trying to strip the splines on the gear. We'll get a new one of those-might be time for some hardened parts....

So, we'll freshen it up with the Suncoast kit, add fluid, filter, and call it good. See if I can break it so we can upgrade. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

thats the reverse pack, toss that stamped drum it the can and get a cast unit from a pre 97 e4od. It will require an aftermarket planet if you want a steel 6 pinion unit. What were the shifts like? Did not see an od pic. The direct looked smoked and the intermediate did not look so good either. The int cluthes did not appear to be the alto stuff, they usually have a waffle cut in them. Forward looked fine.

Well, the bad news is we stripped the splines clean out of that E4OD unit on a 2-3 shift, (4x4 of course)empty on gravel-at 2 AM. We only had to walk about a mile before we had a mercy ride back to the shop (Thanks Mrs. Knapp.) Conclusion of the story in new thread, but we aren't too impressed with that piece.

seems to work pretty good in some I have built /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif. Which splines? the outer that the reverse clutch frictions spline into the drum? Dont see how a 2-3 shift can do that.

that would be the o/d planet. The drum I refered to was the reverse, the 4r is a stamped part and under stress will flex and jam up the reverse cluthces, this is why they are hard to get off the drum. The e4 is a cast part that will not flex, I have yet to see one break.
