My transmission is acting up. It is shifting to second when I stop. When I start to take off it shifts to first hard and starts to make a growling noise until it shifts to second. It also hesitates when I put it in reverse and shutters. Any ideas?

I don't know about the first to second shift,......BUT, the shuttering in reverse is definitely a clutch pack problem....I know that, because that's what exactly happened to mine...
I talked to Brian from BTS about it....[that was several years ago], and I had a BTS transmission put in....His cost my run upto $4000, but that is a good deal for what you get....other than that, you may try a Ford 4R100 ""HD"" rebuild....I would definitely not go with a local transmission shop rebuild....Check you tranny fluid....It's most likely black, from the wear of the clutch pack plates....Mostly likely you in for a new tranny...PERIOD

Transmission shop said it sounds like the planetary gear came apart. They are tearing into it today or monday. I guess we'll see if he is right.

There is a snap ring that's prone to snap out of it's groove there. They have a new style snap ring to replace it. Make sure that is done if that's the case. Just don't put the old one back in, or it will happen again more than likely. Ask me how I know.

"Low Range" light

Hey all! I'm new to the forum but it looks like a great resource. I recently purchased a 1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 7.3 L turbo diesel. This evening, I'm not sure if I hit a switch or something, but the "low range" light is on suddenly and I'm wondering how I can turn it off, as it's obviously revving pretty high. Good thing it's 30 below and lots of ice here in Calgary cuz we can't go very fast  , but if someone could help me that would be great.

Love the Forum btw!!!

Turn your 4X4 switch to the 2WD mode. You may have to step on the brake to get it to come out of that mode.

The transmission has to be in NEUTRAL to shift out of 2WD LO . If you did not select 2WD LO then something is wrong with the GEM (4WD module) (Generic Electronic Module)

I have a problem with mine, it will shift into 4WD anytime it wishes to. My solution was to cut a switch into the power to the transfer drive motor. See my post "4X4 transfer module" . If I need 4WD I just turn on power to the drive motor.

Found out this morning that if the windshield leaked, water could run down and get into that module .
