I was looking under the truck for locations to hook-up a transmission filter and I noticed there is a T connections at the back of the transmission where the return line connects. It looks like they used a banjo nut to connect the output line to the input line on the 4R100. I don't remember there being one the E4OD. Can someone explain what this is for and how it works.

Thanks,

Sure -its a bypass line in case the flow through the coolers gets interrupted. It has a spring loaded valve in the middle of it. If the pressure from the output line overcomes the spring pressure, fluid travels through this bypass back to the input - it keeps the transmission alive long enough (hopefully) for you to recognize and correct the problem.

So this is a flow by-pass, not a thermal bypass? I figured it must be some type of by-pass by how they had the lines connected between the output and input but didn't know which it was.
