1999.5 F350 Dually CC long bed.. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on ways to keep the trans cooler. I have Mag-Hytec diff covers and trans pan on my 1996 F350 and I love em. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to put them on my 1999. I tow quite a bit, but it is kind of expensive. Any ideas?

Thank you for your time, Matt

The best option for keeping the transmission cool is to install a 6.0 Trans cooler. It is about 3 times larger than the one in your truck now and is a direct bolt in. You will have to use 1/2" hose and adapters to mate up to the factory 3/8" lines.

Most people agree that the transmission pans help, but not nearly the amount the larger cooler does.

You can get aftermarket coolers that will also help drop the temps, but the 6.0 cooler is about the most effective cooler out there.

x2 on what Ken said. Trousley ford is the cheapest around.

You can pick up either the 26 row or the 31 row cooler from Tousley Ford Parts (Site Sponsor). They run $280 and $371 for them. This is a fair price as they have become popular in the 7.3L trucks so they are harder to find. You may find one in a wrecked truck, but you have no idea what is trapped inside them and cleaning them is pretty hard without a specific flush machine.

When you get one, you can use the instructions I put together to install it. Also has information on the coolers and the part numbers.

Where did you find that? Is it as good as the one from the 6.0's?

Perhaps so but when Mark K did the tests with probes all over the trans, they didn't love the pan much. He found no difference

I wouldn't. Why would you do that? How do I know what it came from? Perhaps the truck was hit and a visual says the part is ok but maybe there is a stress when it was hit and it is weak? Maybe the trans pumped garbage thru the cooler when it died?

Diesel Site no longer sales the Tru-Cool product. Not sure if anyone else carries them. I've googled around but couldn't find anyone???

I don't know. It is smaller than the 6.0 cooler and it doesn't attach as cleanly. I'd either scour ebay to find a 6.0 cooler or get one from Tousley and pay a bit more for the performance and the fit.

Using Bing instead of Google, here's one I found:

transmissioncoolers.us: Tru-cool MAX coolers

Here's another:

Tru-Cool MAX transmission cooler *without external cold weather thermal bypass Makco Transmission Parts

But don't be surprized if those suppliers don't have any product to ship to you. Tru-Cool is made by Long Thermal Products, which is now a division of Dana Corp. Dana recently went through bankruptcy, so they are in a mess after firing a lot of their staff. Most of the links on their website that mentions Long Thermal Products don't work. Dana primarily supplies OEMs, and aren't much into aftermarket products. I suspect they bought Long Thermal for their OEM products, not for the aftermarket products such as the Tru-Cool Max. I tried to find a dealer list for Long Thermal or Tru-Cool products, to no avail. I did find this:
http://www.dana.com/wps/wcm/connect...477f/dext-TOC_SpecSheetEngWeb.pdf?MOD=AJPERES

So I suspect Bob at Dieselsite stopped carrying the Tru-Cool tranny coolers because Long Thermal is in such a mess without enough employees left to carry the mail.

Personally I need the cold weather bypass. The last of the snow melted in my yard yesterday. It fell in November.
