Ford remanufactured trannys don't hold up. Just lost my 5th assy's in 104K miles along with 2 rebuilds. This last one was replaced by Colorado River Ford in Kingman, AZ, they keep E40D's in stock. Lasted 2500 miles then instantly lost planetary gears going up slight grade in Buelton, CA. Dealer Vreeland Ford sais they never heard of problem, but ordered assy. and installed. Thanks goodness for warranty, but the one that blew in AZ was within 36,000 warranty, but 2 months over. Ford wouldn't take care or even partially. Running large 2500lb B&M cooler. Selling boat and truck I give up. $15,000 in transmission to drive 104k miles doesn't make me want to purchase another Ford.

Call BTS Brian's Truck Shop.

http://www.brianstruckshop.com/

Maybe some people running his trannys will chime in.

Also, put a BIG tranny cooler on it.

Good luck.

They are hoards of beefer parts for the E4OD. Here's just one website: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/E4OD.htm

Transmission work isn't for every do it yourselfer of course. When you add up the cost of all the upgraded parts available, the builders are getting about $1500-2K in labor without even pulling out your tranny. No offense to BTS, your paying for their knowledge of what parts to upgrade. I'm sure thats the way some will want to go. The suncoast convertors probably have about 500% markup on them, and in my OP you don't need it unless your draggin your truck. Any billet cover convertor is 100% better than the stock units we have. Those Ford Reman, units probably have a standard $200 reseal kit in them and clutches as needed, no upgrades. All those planetary's need is the lube hole drilled oversize for more oil. Now there is a steel unit out instead of aluminum too.

5 failures is enough to have anybody pulling out their hair, just bad luck and lack of a knowledgeable rebuilder. There not rebuilding them in house if their off the shelf, their buying them. That's why they don't know about the planet failures and how to correct them. The mechanic who installs a rebuilt unit instead of rebuilding the unit himself is doing himself out of money he could earn on the rebuild labor and the knowledge of what caused the failure.

if you think BTS is just another rebuilder, you should call and talk to Brian...
I also went thru 5 trannys until I bought a BTS, 2 1/2 yrs and 100k miles later, its already outlasted any of the others with "0" issues... great guy selling great trannys /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

I'm sure BTS does fine work from what i have read here. I don't need to call him but thanks just the same. To be clear, the rebuilder reference was made to the 5 Ford Dealer failures, and dealers who keep one in stock from the first post. A guy named Jim Morrison at the Ford DSO center in Charlotte N.C. taught me what i need to know to keep my trannys going for as long and as little as possible. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Not the same Jim Morrison of the Doors. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif This Jim was loaned to Holman and Moody to make the C-6 Drag worthy by moving the snap ring groove machined into the case and drums outward so a couple of extra clutches fit in the packs. Back when the corporate thinking was what wins on Sunday sells on Monday and every Joe could have the hottest setup if he worked 9-5.
Honda and Toyota the dominate engines at Indy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif not if guys like Jim were still running things.
