I am sort of new here and have been browsing around for a month or so trying to learn about my truck. Last week while towing a trailer 6500lbs I had a problem exactly like a post I read. However, I did not find the fix. First, I have a 99 (made in 1-99)but does not seem to be a 99.5. It has the airbox in the fender. It is a 350srw completely stock with 140k and has never towed until I bought it 2 months ago. I have 2 problems maybe you guys could help with.

1- when tranny shifts to third, it seems to have 2 parts (shifts) to it. I think I read where a sonnex valve fixed it. If this is true could I get more detail on where to purchase this thing?

2-I have a pretty good leak of pwr steering fluid between the master cyl. and the pwr boost. I have not seen this on the forum even with searches on suggestion/help with the repair......

Welcome to TDS even tho you've been a member for a while as you said this is your first post.

The tranny issue is the TC locking up either in 3rd or OD depending on load, pcm code etc. and is normal. Under a good load like towing the TC will often lock up in 3rd and then shift into OD and the spacing between the two can be quite short depending. The tranny mods you mention will firm up things, but I'm not sure if they will change where you are seeing the actual shifts or the TC locking up.

Can't help on the other question.

BTW when you get around to it add what you have for your PSD in your signature and include some idea of where you are located (both can be entered in the "My Home" area) which will help others in answering some questions.

Thanks Larry, The tranny started doing it when I was towing and has continued to do it with no load. 1-2 is normal 2-3 happens at the normal rpm but it does not seem to shift all the way into 3rd. after a few seconds depending on the acceleration it seems to slide into 3rd all the way and then 3-4 is normal.

If the sonnex mod will help, where would be a place to buy this kit?

The sonnax will only help firm the shifts and make them crisp and fast. The problem you are describing is looking more like the T/C locking and unlocking. If you are towing, you should be towing with the O/D turned off. You can monitor the the T/C lock and unlock habits through a T/C LED. Give Garrett a call at blackclouddiesel.com, they also have the Sonnax kit.
