Yup, my truck just started using oil about 6 months ago and I decided to keep my eye on it, and it's getting worst. A gallon every 1500 miles. What do you think?

Thanks Hammer! Is this common? Never had a problem on any of my other PSD's like this?

It's not unheard of....the external injector O-rings going bad happen alot more with the OBS trucks.

If it is blowing blue smoke when you take your foot off the accelerator at traffic lights, or on the freeway off ramp, I'm willing to bet it's the turbo. Happened to me last December with less than 100,000 miles on the clock. Easily checked by taking off the turbo hose and checking for end play on the impeller.

Thanks guys, No blue smoke Ted, just a little white haze, barely noticable at idle and poor fuel mileage and oil missing. I'm going to call Beans or Swamps and get a set of single shots, ATS housing and regulated reture fuel, while I have the truck out of service

I'm guessing that from your year model that you are out of warranty? If so, my sympathy. If not, take it to the dealer. Whatever it is will not be inexpensive.

I just went through this myself and it was the injectors. Sometimes the o-rings on the injectors can be the culprit. If so, you may get by with just replacing the o-rings... that did not work for me.

The seals in the turbo can do the same thing. If the turbo seals are leaking oil the turbo can blow it right into the engine... or out the exhaust. This can be checked by removing the exhaust pipe and the intake pipe to the turbo, then inspecting the inside for excess oil. (There might be a little on the intake due to the breather, which is not a problem.)

Neither of the above will generate any noticable exhaust smoke.

One good check to run is a crankcase pressure test. That will tell you if you have more serious problems such as rings or valves. I'm not sure exactly how to do this or what an acceptable range is but I'm sure someone will chime in with more knowledge than I.

Good luck!

Still.......I am at a loss. Still using 1/2 gallon and 300 miles a tank full. Strong smell at tail pipe and the same haze no matter the temps. Truck makes close to 800 tq and has loads of power and runs great otherwise. What should I do? Compression test? or crankcase? Maybe its the injector cups? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Garmon's says I should put a B series in it, and I'm starting to believe them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/depressed.gif

When I first saw and read this I was thinking turbo leaking into exhaust terribly badly,, but this makes me think differently...[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] I would say with fuel milage suffering like THAT it has to be injector related, Very poor effeciency from them,, or what ever. White smoke is raw fuel,, do your eyes burn at the tail pipe? If so it sounds like one or more is dumping alot more fuel than you can burn,, does the oil smell like diesel fuel too? Maybe an oil sample would be one way to check, but sounds like your changing your oil the way I did on my first car,, just keep adding it,, so it's always fresh! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif Sorry for a joke at your expense,, keep us posted on what you find.

Well, the injectors are from Bean's with less than 4,000 miles on them. When I did the injectors Tommy at Garmon's said that a few of my spilts shots had questionable o-rings. So I thought I cured the problem with new single shots and o-rings. I also put new glow plugs in. It is a raw smell, not like oil, like fuel. My boss says I'm crazy for putting oil in it and says I should get rid of it. Don't worry Jim, I can take a joke! Unlike some members here that can't.......lol

For whatever it's worth, I looked at my crank case vent in my intake and oil is seeping out this time. Before it wasn't, And it's a serious case of.....

BLOW-BY /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Get under the truck with some degreaser, masking tape, and some print yellow or white engine paint. I prefer Cat. yellow, but that is just because we have many gallons of it.

Using a clean rage, and nothing more wipe the grease and gunk off of the area one inch on each side of the oil pan gasket. Then make several passes of masking tape over the gasket.

You do not want to get either paint, or cleaning solvents on the gasket, hence the DRY rag, and masking tape.

Now completly wipe down the oil pan, and ue a small about of degrasser to cut the gunk, and then wirebrush the oil pan down to the bare metal, or at least close to the bare metal

Carefully inspect the oil pan for any pinholes or corroson. If you find any then order a new oil pan.

If you find no holes or corrosion then paint the pan with the brightest egine paint you can find. Then pull the tpe off and watch for the next few weeks to see if you are getting any oil out of the oil pan seal.

It takes maybe 30 minutes to do this, and it can save you a lot of tie in pulling the pan, and will save you a all fortune on injector.

My second bet would be that you have a back injector.

WHen you changed the oil, was there any exhust smell to it, or water present?

Have you tried a hot egine oil change, where you run the engine on a two hour drive, and then as soon as you get hoe drain the oil and oil filter? This is done to see how much exhaust/foaming you are getting, but also that you are running a proper Diesel approved oil.
