When i get up to about 38 - 42 mph while just putting along and not in a hurry, truck will start bouncing and jumping like the front end is going out of whack. I do know that the tires are needing replacing, but this has also been known to happen with good tires as well. Maybe its out of balance, or something needs to be shimmed? But once you get out of the mph range, it smooths out. Sometimes I wonder if it is the beauty of owning a straight axle front end.

Anyone got any ideas what this may be and whats a fix for it?

this would happen on my 94. check the tie rod ends for play, and install a steering stabilizer, possibly a dual cylinder stabilizer depending on what size tires you run. also check the steering box for excessive sector shaft play. the box may need adjustment or a new sector shaft bushing kit.

viberations at that speed usually mean tire problems...balance, seperation, bulging of the sidewall or tread. when your shocks are worn out they will not suppress the effects of the problems and can get really bad..... wheel "shimmy", or shakeing back and forth could also indicate worn front end/steering joints.

I had a problem VERY similar to this...would get a lot of vibration and bounce in the front end at certain speeds...speed up/down a little and it goes away...Replaced bushings, had it aligned, new tires, steering stabalizer, tires balanced....nothing was helping...It turned out that it WAS the balance...took 3 balances before they got it right (took it to a different tire shop the thrid time) now its rides like a dream. I see you have 33's...bigger tires are harder to balance...I would start there. Hope this helps some...

I have the very same problem with mine. I have 315/75/16 on stock aloca wheels. I was told yesterday that a wider wheel will fix this problem. What wheels and tires are you running?

unless the wheels you are currently running are too narrow for your tires, I'm thinking wider wheels wont fix your problem. typically wider wheels and tires will amplify any problems you may have in the frontend. if your wheels are too narrow then you have safety issues as well as mechanical issues, and wider wheels would be in order but dont underestimate what a good balance job on ALL the tires will do for your vehicle...

I agree....many guys run that tire size without problems. The guys at my local tire place (the one that couldn't get it right) were using sticky weights on the INSIDE of the rim, and hammer on style weights on the INSIDE edge of the rim (for all four wheels). The problem here was that the rotor guard was rubbing through the weights after a few miles...then BOOM out of balance! So after doing this TWICE and telling them "do not put sticky weights on the inside of the rim!" i went to another shop...Showed the guy what was going on...he said that if I REALLY wanted them balance REALLY well, he would suggest using hammer on style weights on the OUTSIDE edge...said most people don't like it cause it doesn't look as good on a polished wheel, but I didn't care, just wanted a smooth ride. Anyway, I let him do his thing and oh my gosh what a difference! And the weights really don't even stand out IMO....

Hopefully my experience will help you a little bit when at the tire shop... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Good Luck,
Casey
