Re: truck not charging trailer battery

Here's a link to the Standard pinout of the 7 pin connector

7 pin Connector pinout

As far as the ford here's the color code and function of the wiring that they provide at the bumper

You need to verify the following... install 2 relays in the underhood powerbox and... 1 each Maxifuse 30A in Power box location #16 for the battery charge circuit and #28 for the Backup light circuit.

Ford color code

Brown/White = Running Lamps
Black/Light Green = Backup lamps
Dark Blue = Trailer Elect. Brake feed
Dark Green = Right Turn/Stop Lamp
Yellow = Left Turn/Stop Lamp
Orange = Battery Charge
White = Gnd

This list should be good for '99-04 F-Super Duty Series F-250 thru
F-550
you will have to verify these connections with the trailer manufacturer, as they may have different pinouts on their plug.

Re: truck not charging trailer battery

I have a new camsuperline dump and after one year of intermittent use and driving only around town, I had to put the battery on a charger. If you just do short trips around town, it may not be enough to charge. I heard someone with the same complaint about 6 months ago. The brimar and the cam superline are the same trailer. I just through it on a battery charger and now I am fine for a while again.

Leaving a breadcrumb for anyone who might run into this problem. On my 2003 F250 supercab with a 6.0 I had problems with the charge circuit. In my case the charge wire had gotten nicked near the connector at the rear of the truck, but inside the wire loom. Salty road water had gotten in there and over the years it ate the wire. In troubleshooting mine I found that the only fuse and relay are in the main box under the dash as outlined in the owners manual. The tricky part is that the wiring goes from there and then runs under the driver's door and then pops out through the floor where there is another connector identical to the one at the rear of the truck. That's where it joins the wire loom to the rear of the truck. I was able to unplug there and confirm there was power coming out of the fuse box.
On both of my 2004 (one early build the other a late build) it looks like the wiring goes from the fuse box to a connector under the fuse boxes under the hood. But both of those trucks have the Electronic Shift On the Fly which might be why the wires go there.

Hope this can help someone, would have saved me an hour if I had known.
