I am getting my windows tinted this Friday and wanted to ask a question. I am going to get the back covered with 15% and the front two sides covered with 5%. I have this setup on my Lightning and its really nice once you get used to it. I just dont think I will be happy with 15% on the front sides bacuse I have the Lariat leather and that tends to brighten the inside up a lot! My question... Should I get the tint accross the top of the windshield? My truck with white with tan bottom and I dont want it to look out of place. If I do get it, how far down the window do most people go?

Why not just tint the whole windshield? 1% would be best.

Now, in all seriousness.... WHY? That 3 or 4 inch tint band at the top of the windshield won't do much to block additional light from entering the cab. Sounds like you picked the wrong interior color if you're so concerned about the interior brightness of the vehicle.

Furthermore, I don't know what state you're in, but 5% on the front windows is illegal in most states. I'm not saying "OMG! Don't do it!". It's your truck, your money and your tickets you risk getting, not I. As such, for all I care, you can paint ALL the windows with black paint.

You also have to take into consideration what kind of film you're going to have applied, as the percentages vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. What one manufacturer calls 15%, it may really be 20%, etc. . The crap from Luminarc and Solargard is just that... crap. The best (and closest) percentage matches that I've found have been with 3M film. Furthermore, due to the composition of the film, it will allow you to see out much better than comparable tint percentages from other manufacturers, while keeping prying eyes out equally if not better than similar percentages from other manufacturers. Expect to pay more for the 3M stuff.

Then of course, you'll have to find a tint shop that will apply 5% on the front door windows. Unless you have a buddy that will do it, it's very unlikely that a shop will apply such percentages on the front door windows, if you were to walk in off the street.

Either way. Good luck. My ultimate suggestion, don't tint the top of your windshield.

I've had no less than 20 vehicles tinted over the years, it's usually customary to tint the back darker than the sides, not lighter.

I think having the back at 15% and the sides at 5% will look funny, and 5% is VERY dark, you won't be able to see out of them well at night.

The windshield strip is referred to as the "eyebrow", and mine on my truck is 6" from the top. It doesn't do a lot for reducing the light in the truck, but it's great for cutting the glare of the Sun at certain times of the day.

If you haven't been to a tint shop yet, you should go and see what you're looking into. 35% is usually the darkest allowed (in states that allow front tinting at all), and the darkest most people ever go on the sides is 20%, which is quite dark. Anything lower than 20% is really difficult to see out of at night.

Thanks for the chart. 15% over the back three windows will make them match the 5% on the front side windows. I have had 5% on my Lightning for 5 years with zero problems! Any tinter in my area will tint to 5% if you go and talk to them in person.

I'm sure this is a little too late but I like the front visor tint, it helps keep the sun glare down when heading straight into the sun...I usually just have it done 6-8" and that's good enough, it actually makes a huge difference.

To be legal, you cannot have tint below the AS-1 line mark on any windshield. I learned that the hard way. It cost me $150 in the state of TN.

Since you said yours is white and tan, I figured I would add these pics. The windshield strip is approx. 6" in the middle and goes to 7" on the edges. I bought the truck with the tint done, so I am not sure what the % is.

What exactly is your concern about it, just how it will look or it's actual function?

We used to have a white Yukon and had the visor tint and it looked good. I have a Slate Grey F250 now and a Birch Metallic Yukon both with the visors done and I like it better than without. I think it looks good and blends into the rest of the truck.

It only costs like 20 bucks so you can always tear it off if you dont' like it.

i have 5% all around except the windshield on mine and it sucks at night until you get used to it white truck with 5% looks good. I dont have anything on the windshield but a visor strip would be nice specifically for the driving into the sunset thing. hows the 20 on the winshield at night? and again check your local and state laws on the front doors, and window drop and or full shield it may be illegal and a hefty fine to some. I know here in jersey last i checked the front door tint is illegal as is the windshield and its a $44 fine last time i got one in 2004 or 5 it may have gone up, Good luck.

I do not think it will look bad unless u go down too far. There should be two small tick lines on each side of the upper area of ur windshield...that is intended to be you cutoff as its where anything below will affect your site (based from a legal standpoint) I'm not sure all vehicles have this but take a look. It's a good reference point either way and trust me it won't look bad black on anything doesn't look bad

I did 5% all the way around and 35% on the whole windshield. I usually do a 50% on the whole windshield I just wanted the truck dark.
