I have a 2003 6.0 diesel f350. Recently, my engine gets into a weird state where when cruising steady at any speed, the turbo cuts in and out. If I stop the engine and restart, the problem goes away.

It has happened several times now. It seems to be caused by long idle periods while decending down a long down grade. It doesn't seem to have any relation to tow-haul mode or the cruise control.

Of course, I can't recreate it for the local Ford dealer.

Has anyone seen this before? What do you recommend?

I just had mine fixed following no boost after towing a load. First VGT solenoid was replaced along with latest flash. Next towing trip it did it again. Now they replaced the EGR valve, and all seems well. We'll see after this weekend tow...

I have had a couple that have had your same symptom. It turned out to be the egr valve. I was able to duplicate it by going up a hill at highway speed and tip into the throttle lightly. I was able to monitor egr valve position and duty cycle and found egr valve sticking. Did you have any codes stored?

How do you monitor the EGR valve? While you are driving? No, I don't have any codes stored. Everything is standard. I did get flashed last fall, but didn't see this problem until just a couple of weeks ago. It is still intermittant. I have a place in the mountains, and the last two times I've come down out of there - idling down hill, it seems to get in this wierd state. The EGR valve sounds logical.

It is the EGR valve that is causing this condition, BUT!!!!!!!

It's usually caused by a voltage difference from the EBP sensor.

Changing the EBP sensor will usually solve it without touching the EGR valve. (which is just doing what it's told to do)

You will need a scan tool to monitor egr valve...or dealer can install vdr and you push a button and make recording for them, return the recorder, and they review recorder to see what input/output is out of range. They do have an updated part for the EP sensor, but I doubt this is your problem in this case. The EP sensor also is used for VGT control and would also cause concerns with performance do to boost and will typically set a code.

Is your check engine light coming on?

Just picked up my 03 from the dealer after check engine light stayed on for the last 250 miles of a 500 mile trip with turbo not working correctly. I had 6 codes stored.

They Replaced the VGT Solenoid, EGR Valve, EBP Sensor, and reflashed with the latest flash. Now running great, best it has ran in quiet some time.

It's going to be your EGR valve.
When I unplugged the wire from my EGR, it did it all the time. After plugging it back in, all was well.

It is true that it's your EGR that's causing the symptom, but it doesn't do what it does from any input of it's own.

It's like if your tire wears out and you replace it. It could be the alignment. EBPS or VGT input

Latest update::
As posted above, my turbo was cutting out with no smoke or surging, just no power after towing my 7000lb toy box camper. First they changed the VGT solenoid and FTF flash, all ok until next tow trip, next they changed the EGR, all ok until next tow trip, yesterday they said the EBP sensor tested ok, so I got a NEW turbo (sticking vanes). I am pleased so far. Turbo listed at $1600.00, expensive fix. At least I have a new egr for new turbo. 03 fully stock. By the way, I've never had to have work done on my 99 12 second modified Lightning. I hope this is all...When these 6.0's run, they run good...

Go to your dealer and say "VDR". They should be able to program a unit that connects to your DLC. There will be a "pen" attached to the unit. When the problem occurs, sumply push the red button on the pen. Depending on how many parameters are being recorded, the VDR can record several "events".

FWIW, I have had many customer concerns fixed by simply installing the VDR....go figure.

Again, Latest update
After a new vgt sensor, then EGR, then new turbo, all was still the same after putting a load behind. I just got back from dealer who finally (as suggested above) replaced the EBP sensor. I hope this 10 second turbo lag when towing finally comes to an end.... I thought it was fixed after every attempt... We'll see.....Again, do not discount the EBP sensor..
