Perhaps I've just become too accustomed to that great whining turbo noise when you accelerate, but I can't remember the last time I really could hear it. I know just enough about engines to be dangerous. Just because the turbo "sound" is no longer noticeable does it mean it may not be functioning properly?

Thanks, in advance, for comments.

Yes, you should be able to hear it. Your wastegate may be stuck open or (uh-oh) the turbo could be toast.

Check the wategate first (engine stone cold, please!!) then if that's OK, you may want to hook up a boost gauge and see if she is boosting.

You probably are use to it. If the engine runs without black smoke, the turbo is working fine. If it was shot you could get out and walk faster (the turbo is required for the engine to run properly). If you are worry then take it into the dealer and they can check the boost. Another test is to take it out on the highway and try pulling out into traffic, if it takes about 2 sec before the engine powers up then the vanes are working properly.

(as previously stated) The 6.0 does not use a waste gate but uses throttle vanes that move back and forth to control the exhaust flow through the turbo. It works the same way the control vanes work on a water-powered turbine.
