On a recent trip, my truck started intermittently making a stuttering or scrubbing-type sound. I noticed it mostly on hard accelleration but also a few times on decelleration. The engine would make sort of a rapid "zhuh-zhuh-zhuh-zhuh" sound, three or four per second. The sound was accompanied by slight loss of power, and black smoke puffed out the exhaust in synch with the sound. I thought I heard the same sound about 2k miles ago, but loss of power was much more pronounced at that time, and the dealer diagnosed it as a stuck EGR, which they replaced under warranty because they said it had a bent piston (!).
Truck has 25,000 miles on it. Does this sound like a turbo issue? Or something else? I'm wondering if the vanes could be all carboned up, since the EGR valve was. Maybe some sensor somewhere is causing the vanes to flutter erratically under boost?? Could this new EGR valve be stuck after just 2k???
