While towing my boat on Monday under certain conditions the turbo sounded like it was making popcorn. I was in Tow/Haul mode cruising along about 60mph and the tach was around 2000 rpm I believe. As I began to climb a small hill I gave her a little more gas, not enough to downshiftcbut just to maintain speed when it started popping like hell. I immediately glanced at the gauges and the only thing abnormal was the boost needle was bouncing with the popping (0-18-0-18). As soon as I let off or forced it to downshift it would quit. Truck ran fine before, during and after all this. This is my first diesel and this does not seem normal. Do I have something that needs attention? Truck is a 2005 with 8k miles and boat weighs around 8,000 pounds. Thanks for any help or opinions.

It sounds like I have a similar problem.

With mine, it is always steady throttle, boost between 10-20 psi, and then it pops down below 10 and back up, etc. This continues until something changes (grade, throttle, etc.).

I notice the situation most when towing, but I hit it twice last weekend empty in mountain driving.

I took it to the dealer, and they are worthless. No codes. They reflashed and said they found nothing specific.

Although I have yet to experience it, sounds to me like Turbo Fart. The 6.0 turbo does not have a waste gate, so it makes a fart noise when it drops overpressure. Try a search on Turbo Fart and you will get soime results-just alot of wading to get to them. I'm sure someone who has experienced it can give you more details.

In my particular case, it isn't under a heavy load or a situation where pressure should need to be blown off or "fart".

Many times towing with 15 psi at 60+mph, steady throttle, maybe a slight grade. I always have lots of peddle left to go.

This is the same trouble I have (see sig). Idiot regional service rep tried to tell me it was from extended idle- but it still happened after the 4th replacement and using AIC at 1500rpm.
The symptoms seem to be heat-related: it only occurs after I've run into town, parked, picked up a load of wood, and then it does the 'turbo fart' on the way home; only its not the standard turbo fart since it happens during acceleration (repeatedly, with a loss of power) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif

Well, I feel better knowing that I am not alone and imagining things. I never thought of it as a fart but that sure describes it. I suppose I'll call my dealer and see what kind of response/solution they have for it. If they want to look at it maybe I should have the boat in tow for a real life trial run. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif I know it will do it because I could make it do it at will by creating the right conditions, the same conditions we all seem to describe. If I find out anything interesting I'll post it.
