Hey ya'll im new to this thread. I have purchased my first Idi and have some questions. My truck is a 1993 7.3 L idi Non Turbo 4x4. I recently have an oppurtunity to buy a banks non wastegated turbo kit. It seems to be complete. my questions are what do I need to make sure is there? Like items that could make or break the deal? I plan on installing the turbo myself, From those that have done it, is it hard? what do i need to look out for? Any information would be a huge help. Thanks

I recently installed a used ATS turbo kit I bought off eBay. If you know your way around vehicles and machinery it's not difficult. The challenge is in figuring out how all of pieces fit together. Also, you may think your kit is complete, but they rarely are, so fabricating skills and general knowledge of hardware are a must.

A parts diagram is helpful if you can find one. Installation instructions are a real plus. I wasn't able to locate this for my ATS non-wastegated kit, but I did find some for their wastegated version, and while not identical, the kits had enough in common that I found the instructions extremely useful. I did some searching and found a link to the Banks Sidewinder (wastegated) owner's manual and installation instructions. Hopefully they will be of some use to you.

Have you called Banks? They may very well have odd pieces you might need like brackets, heat shields, rubber gaskets and seals, a transmission dipstick, and possibly a paper copy of the manual for your kit.

McMaster-Carr sells o-rings by type and size if you can't find them elsewhere, but you have to buy in small quantities, not singles. Be sure to get Viton for anything in contact with fuel or oil.

When all else fails, try a good hardware store, or even HD/Lowes. For example, my seller failed to include the rubber grommet that fits into the valley pan, and ATS no longer sells them for my kit. I found a rubber gasket in the plumbing departrment at Lowes which needed a little trimming with a razor knife to fit the bill.

Good luck with your install. Sorry I don't have specifics for the Banks kit, but there are lots of knowledgeable folks on this forum, surely someone will have detailed info.

Thanks for your help. im new to diesel engines but i have a few buddies that are diesel mechanics. Yes i called banks and i was pretty disappointed they had me on hold for 20 minutes and the tecnicians would not call me back. So Ill give them another try today. Hopefully I can get thru to them. Thanks for the sidewinder info, i might be able to use that as somewhat of a refrence. Much appreciated.

Okay. So i just got off the phone with banks. The guy was very helpful. I found out that since the kit im purchasing is off of an automatic e40d, and my truck is a ZF5 manual that i have to either order or have an exhaust shop bend the crossover pipe i believe is what he said. Do any of you have any experience with this problem? and what did you do? Its $400 dollars to order it from banks. Which would kill my deal, Therefore is it something that my local exhaust shop could whip out no problem? What do you all think?

A good custom exhaust shop should have no problem fabricating the crossover pipe. I just had a guy build one for mine because the piece of crap my eBay seller included didn't fit right. He also did my 3"exhaust from the downpipe on back but beware, a lot of guys' machines can't bend 3". Mine was straight because I have a dump bed, but YMMV.

Heck no. the guy that did mine had to bend it in two sections. He welded mine, but if your buddy doesn't weld, he can use clamps.

+1, I'd swap the whole motor if I didn't want to drive the newer truck.

94 is just parts, body is ruff, front axle holes are wobbled out no trans. But engine is complete might need a pump rebuild. But if the motor is beefier i might swap it out this winter when i get some time. Im an owner/operator time is at a premium for me

The turbo motor has numerous improvements including enlarged wrist pins, improved valve guides, improved pistons, and more. Wait for this winter and swap the entire motor.
