If it does it's going to be a *****, those bolts look like a quarter turn from snapping. Also won't I ruin the manifold to up pipe gaskets? How about the downpipe, should I pull that too?

Is there enough flex in the y-pipe to move far enough to pull the turbo? I see the flex sections in the exhaust but I'm betting they don't go back into shape if moved and then I'll have a bear of a time aligning the inlet to turbo. Need some wisdom here!

Loosen them! It makes it so much easier when reinstalling the turbo! I tried without loosening and ended up doing it in the end, and wish I would have to begin with.
No gaskets in the manifold to up pipe.

Going to have to torch the bolts if I do, they're that bad. thing is I had the turbo replaced in June 08 under warranty with a reman, the one I'm pulling, and they never loosened the y-pipe. Not sure how they did it but these bolts were never touched. I did loosen the downpipe.

Got 3 of the 4 nuts loose, had to heat them cherry red, pass side outer is so rusted/rounded can't get it. Bolts are so rusted into the manifold there is no way they are coming out and this is going to turn into an ugly project if I try. So either I pry the y-pipe back away from the turbo enough to remove it or cut all the manifold to y-pipe bolts. I'll have to pull the whole y-pipe then to remove and replace the bolts and pray that I can get the bolts out of the manifold, and there's no easy access to do that. fudge

I work on a number of these trucks including mine and I never undo the bolts. I pry up the pass. side of turbo first and then lift or pry the driver's side out of the docking in bracket. I have never had a problem. Installation is somewhat the reverse. The driver's side end being a little low makes it slip into y pipe flange.

Just an FYI on exhaust bolts... use an impact (air) wrench set to lowest torque setting in reverse. As you attempt to remove the exhaust bolts, gradually increase the torque of your air wrench. The hammering of the air wrench does a good job of breaking the rust on the bolts as you increase the torque. Eventually the bolts will come loose without breaking.

Using this technique, I have yet to break an exhaust bolt. (Knock on wood) By not using the torque wrench in this fashion, I break them nearly every time. When you reinstall the exhaust bolts, be sure to use anti-seize compound on them.

Good for a Texas truck, but my Michigan truck has had too many salty winters. The bolts are rusted to much less than their full diameter between the manifold flange and uppipe flange and are solidly rusted into both. It will take the rosebud tip on my blue wrench to get them out.

Heat them, break them, but remove them, THEN REPLACE WITH NEW. With these bolts loose, the turbo lines up easily. Or your next thread will be:
"DO I HAVE AN EXHAUST LEAK IN MY UP-PIPE?"

This is kinda off subject, I too am attempting to remove, clean and re-install turbo, as this is my very first stab at it, I've come across my first hurdle, the turd-bo is completely free and moves around within it's little personal bubble under the hood, what's the best route to extracting it?, I can remove the alternator or the oil filter housing but it looks like one of them needs to go, another option might be to separate the turbo into pieces and pull it out I'd rather not go that route, any suggestions?

Loosen the exhaust outlet pipe just before the cat and move aside a little. Pry up on the left(passengers)side of the turbo down by the front mount, remember there is a drain tube stuck into the bottom of the turbo but it will pull out. Pry it up on the left side then roll it out. In fact, having done this once now I would loosen the outlet pipe first even before I pulled the turbo mount bolts, makes the rear one easier to get at and makes the marmon clamp on the inlet easier too.

I wouldn't bother removing anything else, it really won't help it can only come out one way. I didn't loosen my y-pipe bolts as everyone recommended and the y-pipe was not an issue, it didn't move or bend at all and lined up perfect when I dropped the turbo back in.

Hey thanks, yeah I had all the exhaust loose and could move the turbo around and upside down if I wanted, I couldn't get it past the alternator and oil filter, I finally finessed it and manipulated it past all of that, now I just need to put it back, also my gasket kit came with four bolts one is smaller and can't figure out where it goes, also came with two tan o-rings and a blue one, I know where one tan one goes. Anyone know about the other two?

The 2 tan/yellowish o-rings go on the oil drain tube, the blue one is for the oil supply line. The 3 larger bolts are for mounting the turbo and the smaller one I don't know yet, possibly the oil drain tube lower mount.

So I need to put both of the tan/yellowish ones on the oil drain tube?, it only had one on it. Do you know how tight I need to put the clamps back on, I've got the one holding the turbo together pretty snug, thanks for all the help, I'm gaining a ton of knowledge

There's an o-ring on both ends of the drain tube. The bottom pulls out just like the top.
