Starting yesterday, when I put the pedal down good there is a noticeable and unusual sound of escaping air from under the hood (Like a sustained whoosh sound until I get off the pedal). When driving slow there is no sound like I described, but boost seems a little lower too. Those blue turbo boots aren't blown off. Delta good (<5º) and no DTC's on the insight. Not alot of coolant escaping the degas cap but there is white residue under the cap. Thanks, Dave

What year is your truck? Is one of your pipes black plastic? If so those are known to split right at the flex joint in the pipe....right underneath the air filter.

You could also have a cracked blue boot. Sometimes they'll crack where you can't see them and start opening up under pressure. Pull them, clean 'em up and give them a good inspection.

X2 with dieselmac also!!! My personal truck had a split boot comming out of the turbo right in line with the clamp on the back side, and I couldnt see it looking from the top of the engine bay.

no damaged parts

I removed, cleaned and inspected the hot side cac boots (blue) on the turbo and intercooler and they are in excellent shape. No holes or tears. The one on the turbo was pretty clean, but the one on the intercooler was a mess and oil appeared to be deposited on the pipe as if it was escaping from under the boot...so maybe that's the whoosh sound source. Also, I removed the air filter and inspected the cold side black plastic tube flex joint and found no cracks on top or underneath using a mirror.

I'll see what happens tomorrow in the morning on the way to work

More later

update

I still got the whoosh sound. It's definitely correlated to the turbo and not speed so I may have missed a hole in the plastic cold side cac tube? or am i on the wrong track. thanks, d

p.s. when the windows are closed it sounds like its coming from the drivers side. The first time I noticed it was on a hot day and I had the ac going and floored it.

I think I am having the same issue. I looked at my boots on the hot side and they seemed fine so I cleaned them and reinstalled them but they will be replaced soon.

Would I notice a change in boost pressure if the cold side is leaking enough for me to hear it?

problem solved

I found two narrow cracks each about 1 in long on the plastic cac pipe just where others said it would be...hidden from view on the flex joint. Replaced it with a metal tube from tousley...problem solved. $105

Thank-you

I know this is a year old but does anyone have a part number for the metal replacement part?

Is there a write up on here about removing the blue boots and cleaning them. I have a similar sound and will check mine out too

I've never seen a write-up. Pretty easy though. Loosen the clamps (12mm) and the boots will slip off pretty easily.

Clean them with a good degreaser that won't leave an oily residue behind. I like to use an electrical contact cleaner. Then bend and twist them to stretch the material and look for splits. They'll usually split on the inside or outside radius.

My guess is that on a 2006, especially if you have 100k+ miles on it those boots are shot. I just replaced mine for the same reason. You have to take them off, clean them with Brake Clean or something similar and flex them. The cracks become immediately apparent. Mine were perforated all over, but looked fine installed on the truck.

New boots from Ford:

6C3Z-6C640-A $44.98
6C3Z-6C640-B $43.52

Those prices are from Tousley Ford and can be found online. Any local Ford dealership should be willing to match those prices; mine was.

The new boots are a bit different than the originals. They are orange inside, and have lips to catch the recesses in the metal tube. You have to remove the three staples that hold the band clamp to the boot on the turbo side, as the new one doesn't come with the clamp. Make sure you get a good, consistent union of the boots and the turbo outlet and IC inlet, then tighten those clamps down until snug, followed by torquing them to 9 lbs./ft. (that will seem like a whole lot when tightening them down, but trust me its okay you won't break anything).

Here's another trick... that you probably won't bother trying until you run into the problem, but these pipes can blow apart under full boost and you will think the engine has blown up when it happens, followed immediately by the thoughts of a 747 landing on the roof of the truck as the turbo spins down with nothing to muffle the sound! I have a small dent in my hood from the hose blowing off and I have had it happen on another truck I worked on as well.

So here's the trick... clean them well... then give them a very light coat of aerosol hair spray before reassembly (make sure you put the hair spray back in the house before your wife catches you with it in the garage).... this will make a tacky surface that prevents the hoses from blowing off at an inconvenient time. It works!

You should always have hairspray in the shop anyway. What else do you use to fuel your potato cannon?

Aqua Net Extra Hold is the best IMO. We've tested everything from ether to carb cleaner, and nothing works better. The big cannon would vaporize a potato, had to shoot lemons out of it (tough skin, hard to pierce). I know we shot one at least 1/4 mile based on the parabolic trajectory, flight time, and some high school physics.
