Truck, 04 with 19000 miles was making turbo farting sound while under accleration. Took to Ford, mechanic says turbo putting out too much boost 29# Says it should only be max 25#.
I believe they are going to change turbo.

Does this sound right?

Did your boost gauge ever read above 25????? The turbo fart is the sound of boost elimination so that makes since, and talk is their changing turbos more often then my wife changes diapers, but maybe one of the techs can educate us on this one..

I've had 4 replacements- I think it only treats the symptoms and not the real problem (which is ???). I had (have) the same signs: turbo fart under acceleration, usually when warm, and diagnosed over/under boost. However, ever since I got stuck in the mud a few weeks ago, and really gunned it in foward and reverse trying to get out, no turbo fart/lack of power. At one time , one of the techs said that F*rd Hotline told him to take it out and really work it to blow the carbon/corrosion off the turbo vanes- maybe he was right /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

There have been and are alot of turbos being replaced because of overboost/underboost due to carboned up vanes. It sounds like they are on the right track. There is also a reprogram for the turbo farts that is to help reduce/eliminate the farts. I have had good luck with the vehicles I have reprogrammed, along with correcting the overboost condition. Extended idles should be avoided on the 6.0 as this allows soot build up and causes egr, turbo vanes to stick. Running them hard will help keep the soot from building up.

The extended idle concerns are a problem even with the aic used duirng extended idle times? I idle often but always use the aic, even when stuck in traffic.

Same problem... truck was also quite sluggish, too much backpressure. It seemed to me that the VGT was in the clamped down position. They are replacing the turbo today.

Good luck

I also suspect the backpressure sensor, cleaned mine with carb cleaner, exercised it a bit with the air hose at 20 psi and it was better for about a week and a half. Then it went back to the old problem. Cleaned it again with no effect.

Carbon build up...

Too much high tech on these things, I want reliabililty. Anyone know if the VGT can be forced into the wide open position? At least you wouldn't get the overboost-backpressure thing...
