Turbonetics or GT38R

Well my stock turbo is on the way out, and I am now in the market for a new one. My stock turbo had an ats housing and wicked wheel. I want to acheive 500 ponies and be able to tow w/o any issues. I think that the Turbonetics 7.3 replacement or gt38r will get the job done fine. Is there something that I am over looking? Please advise. I have read a bunch about the BB turbo and would like to hear from anyone that is using the Turbonetics 7.3 replacement. Pros/Cons of each would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Dave

turbonetics has ceramic ball bearings...

I don't think that's true of the bolt on replacement for Powerstrokes. I believe the ceramic BB will be a future upgrade kit. I'm needing to buy a turbo right now because my stocker lost a couple turbine blades last week.

www.shop.blackwidowdiesel.com and like Bigpowr said it's a one year unconditional no hassle warranty on the turbonetics, give brian a call and he can work with you to suit your driving needs and power needs. I bought two of them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif and like mech2161 said there are a ton of options to choose from.

Freddy Fastone, why, pray tell, did you buy TWO turbonetics turbos and which two did you buy?

From what I've gathered, the GT38R won't handle that cfm efficient enough for safe EGT's at that hp level(Good to around 400hp). I'm not positive, but I went with the H2e for that reason myself. I do miss the quicker spool once in a while, but the excessive compressor whistle got annoying when hauling/towing heavy. The H2e is much tamer on the noise and flows real good once she spools up. I'm not looking to race anyway, so the spool up "lag" is just fine.
Not sure about the turbonetics, haven't seen that one yet.

I wouldn't use either of those for 500 HP. Need something bigger like a Gt42/Turbonetics 62+/H2E/Aurora.

For the towing crowd, either the Garrett BB or the Turbonetics standard drop in replacement-which is not a ball bearing, but spools nicely, lowers EGT's, etc. and is priced accordingly.

Brian

I was affraid that someone was going to say that. So with that being said which of the following would best suit my needs and wallet? Gt42/Turbonetics 62+/H2E/Aurora. Thanks.

Is ATS the only place that I can get an Aurora? The last I knew they didn't make a set up for the 7.3.

Brian any idea on when the new street class turbo will be ready with piping/pricing?

Thanks all

Dieselsite has a nice H2e conversion kit, I went that route. Bob is a great guy to deal with too.

ill have to chime in as well here........i went with the garret myself and i love it but when i was talking to dennis at ITP about my upgrades he told me that if i wanted to keep the stock injectors i couldnt go wrong with the garret but if i wanted to throw bigger injectors at it then in his opinion i would be best served with a H2E type setup.......i tow around 7-8k with my new garret up and down hills and never any surge even with my leadfoot, but if your looking for 500 horse and a good tow vehicle your going to need a bigger unit than the garret or turbonetics but thats just my edumacated opinion /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

garrett ball bearing will work for 500+ just ask elmo. unless you're going for real big #'s then you need more, but i highly doubt you'll need more.

Re: Turbonetics or GT38R

Well I broke down and bought one today.

After a long talk with Brian at Black Widow I decided to go with the Turbonetics 7.3 Replacement. Brian asked some questions on how I use my truck and what my plans were. Since I only want to have 500 ponies once in awhile and need to be able to tow 7k-10k pounds safely he would suggest this turbo in my one step at a time pace to 500 ponies.

After I talked with Brian I thought it was odd that I’ve wanted to do to my truck what he has done to his shop truck with a little more hp /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Like Brian said do you want a sled puller or a daily driver/tow rig? We can do both, it just will do one better then the other. Right now I tow/haul way more then I pull sleds unless there is snow involved but that is another subject. We discussed what I have already installed on my truck and felt that I was headed in the right direction to where I want to be. Once I have an IC and Mini-Me’s I would like to get into the Pro Street Diesel pulling in my area. Way too many GM’s and Dodge’s pulling at the events in my neck of the woods.

The last and largest factor of me purchasing this turbo is that it was cost effective for what I am doing at the moment and will be doing in the future since I am only in the market because mine is on the way out.

I was very impressed with how Brian deals with his customer’s. We talked for almost an hour about trucks and shared experiences with products and not once did he try to hurry up the call and blow me off. Nor did he say this is what you need and it will only be 2 bazillian dollars, payment will be cash, check, or charge Mr. Wiles.

Being a consumer of the items that Brian sells I fell that this will be the start of a long relationship.

Thanks to all that replied

Elmo is strong for what he's using /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif, but if he is near 500hp it's using NOS to make up for the little turbo I think. I don't recall him doing it on #2. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
