Soooo

Like everyone else I have seen articles and posts about giving the turbo/exhaust time to cool down Before one shuts the engine down and how if you dont this can hurt the turbo.

Does this go for just driving around town Or going back and forth a couple miles to work each day. I can understand this being a issue when pulling something or when doing a long distance drive. Yes I would give it a minute or to before shutting it off But what about just short distance driving or just around town.

I'm asking because I have the scanguage II which doesnt have a exhaust temp option and i dont really plan on putting in a regular gauge just to see the exhaust temps. Is this something I Really Need to worry about.

Thanks.....

Your exhaust temps can easily hit 800 just running around the block. Yes, it matters.
Every time you step on the "go" pedal, exhaust gas temps climb. At idle, right after start-up they will climb to 325°F real quick. Just tapping the "go"pedal will make them jump into the 400°F range. If I go 15 feet from where I park my truck, my EGT's are into the 600°F range (I live on a good sized hill).

The only difference between running it down the highway, around the block or around town (loaded or not) would be the time it takes to cool off to an acceptable level. Without the EGT probe, your guessing what is long enough and what isn't.

Ahhhh Mounty

So the bottom line is I need the exhaust gas temp gauge :(

If you let it idle for about 2 full minutes after running around town, you should be ok.
This is another area where running a full synthetic oil helps you help the engine. Full syn oil won't "coke" as much as a "dino" oil will. Syn oil takes the heat better.

I'm with mounty, it really is much more important than you think. Do you tow on a regular basis? If so, another reason why egt's are important to monitor. I don't tow heavy(car hauler/1 ton jeep) but i can see egt's as high as 1200-1400 that borderline too hot. If your not monitoring the egt's you could unknowingly climb into a "too hot" scenario and damage may result. I'd put an egt probe up high on my list of things i "need" to monitor, along with eot/ect, ficm and tranny temps. Just my .02

I think I may be having a problem with my turbo but I'm not sure, its slow to pull off and billows black smoke, is that turbo or injector?
could be either one as black smoke means not enough air/too much fuel. it depends...does it have low power at takeoff and more like normal at higher speeds? if so it may be a turbo issue as they seem to stick and cause low power on takeoff but run fine at highway speeds.

thats exactly what it does, it happened yesterday, afternoon on the way back from work, lots of black smoke and low power but fine on the highway. I did not know about cooling the turbo down until I saw this forum, I'm new to turbo diesels, is there anything else I should know before this thing causes me to have to remortgage my house for the repair.

yeah unfotunately that sounds like the turbo vanes are sticking. the turbo is a variable geometry design and has little vanes in the turbine housing that control the amount of backpressure to control boost. most of the time they stick fully extended which causes this issue. you may be able to take it apart and clean out the rust and corrosion but this really doesnt work that well for long. worth a try imo but you may be looking at a new turbo. as for the egt gauge idk if it really is super important for a stock engine. if you have a programmer or other performance add ons then yeah i would get a gauge but on a stock engine imo there is really no way the egts can get hot enough to hurt anything. just my opinion

Just FYI, I'm troubleshooting a high EGT problem that I "think" is related to the EP sensor and PCM programming that even in stock programming can take it to 1400*, so I would just say that while these are normal observations, your mileage may vary. With the AC on cruising through my neighborhood, my EGT's will still be 500* when I pull into the driveway. It usually takes about 3-5 minutes with the AC off to bring the temps down below 350*.

Oh and flyflapper, you might want to give the turbo cleaning a shot. It may or may not help for very long, but you have virtually nothing to lose by cleaning it (other than your time). I would rather try to fix something myself if there's a chance I can make a difference rather than just throw parts at a problem.

For an upgrade, you might consider a PowerMax turbo, which seems to pair up well with the stock injectors when running aftermarket tuning. If not, you might consider getting a used one from someone who has already upgraded. Best of luck and keep us posted!

I would recommend a BulletProof Diesel EGR cooler and you won't have to worry about it again, although you still have quite a bit of stuff to still get into to get to the EGR cooler.

Is there an advantage to using an egr delete, if you can't tell these engines are new to me and I just don't know enough to make an educated decision on which way is the best way to handle the issues with these engines apparently come with.

the egr delete may save you some cash with having to replace leaking egr coolers and carboned up egr valves. but it not emissions legal to run a delete.
