Did the white truck tonight; outlet had been flipped around for a few weeks but I ran some tubing (heater hose) tonite. 4' piece up over the master cylinder and down to the bottom of the frame rail. I have a little filter deal (that looks like a tiny K&N) that I'm gonna put on the end of it when I get an adapter for it.

Any problem with these trying ever to suck up any trash? Wondering if water at interstate speed will be a problem... or crashing through the occasional pond in our sorrily paved parking lot at work...

Anyone with one, lemme know... also, I've heard heater hose is not good to use for this- what is?

Clive,
I had my ccv that way for several months. I now have mine plumbed into the exhaust after the muffler so as not to get any backpressure. You really don't need anything on the end of hose mine never leaked a drop of oil. You want to be very careful with putting anything on the end of hoseto restrict it because you can have bad results. When I first did mine I put a bottle with holes all over it and a little steel wool to catch the oil that will not come out of it anyway. I drove it a few miles and it must have caused crankcase to build up pressure because alot of oil blew out bottom of truck. I think the oil came from front and rear seals, I didn't think the sealswould reseal but they did. So I learned my lesson to not put any restriction on end of hose.

Hope this might keep you from making same mistake as me.

I would leave the end of the tube open. The International trucks do it this way. I would be concerned about a little filter freezing up in cold weather as there is a lot or water vapor that comes out of there in cold weather. I am guessing there are no conditions where there is a suction on the end of the end of the hose. I have seen 5/8 fuel hose at CarQuest and I was thinking about switching to that. I have a piece of clear vinyl hose on there now that has been holding up.

10-4, open ended it is. Never thought about little filter freezing up.

Gonna double check my plumbing and make sure it won't get kinked now... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Chris, I'm still lookin' for a spare PCM, for next time you come to middle TN. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif No luck at the local auto parts houses, haven't been to the stealership yet. Gonna snag one off eBay sometime hopefully. can't be a useful part of the help network with no spare parts!!

I used diesel fuel rated hose my local parts house stocked. Reused the stock breather elbow with an adaptor, as I recall, was 3/4"x5/8", looped it over the brake booster and out to a bung aft of the muffler running the hose as flat as possible.

Can someone give me a bit of schooling on this? What is the purpose of the valve cover breather? Is there one only on the driver side? Why not the other side? Why vent it or pipe it into the exhaust instead of into the intake as stock?

I am getting some blowby out of the oil filler cap/dipstick. Wondering if this indicates a possible block on the driver side valve cover breather or if it is a symptom of a larger problem.

Thanks,
Rob

It is Just a breather to vent Blowby and only one is needed. The reason for turning it, is for the guys with intercoolers to keep from filling the intercooler with oil.

I did this on my truck except I made a puke tank out of some pvc and some big steel wool used 2" ? pipe a nipple the same size as the breather baffle, glued the caps on and put a pet cock on the bottom. My truck has alot of blow by ! It has been this way since I bought it,Truck has 302,000 on it it runs too good to mess with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Hey Clive!

No one actually answered this but Masami touched on it....

The issue is only that the readily available and cheap 3/4" heater hose is not oil rated and slowly softens and will swell from the oil. There is not much in the way consequences, but the hose eventually breaks down. I have had heater hose in service there for about... 2 years??? and it is getting a litle soft and "ouzy" at the connections...

God Bless,

The diesel fuel rated hose was 5/8" ID so thats why I used the 3/4"x5/8" hose adaptor fitting with the breather hose elbow. Also the tailpipe bung checkvalve hose fitting was 5/8". After buying the 5/8" hose, I don't want to know what they would charge for 3/4"! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
