Was at the local injection shop last week and showed off my tymar setup just to be shot down. I was told that the tymar setup is junk sucking all that hot air in from under the hood. I have read the stories here about how good the setup was...hence the reason I bought it, but now I am second guessing myself. Guy told me he would hate to be my pistons! He showed me another truck that had a semi box around the filter(cold air). What do you think?

Your fine. Whoever shot you down is just jealous that your getting the same performance as him, and spent half the amount of cash that he spent on his intake system.

Testing on this site has shown that underhood temps are only about 10 degrees warmer than outside ambient temps, when your speed is above about 20mph.

While sitting, the temps do get warmer, but goes away as soon as you get moving again.

Something else you have to consider, is that the intake air temp can reach temps of almost 400 degrees upon leaving the turbo. Especially if your running above 25psi (outside the efficiency MAP for the stock turbo).

On the superduties, the Charge Air Cooler is used to help bring intake temps back down, but they are still measured in hundreds of degrees. This is part of the reason for Water Injection. The heat in the charge air turns the water to steam. This lowers the air temp, which in turn does help lower combustion temps.

If your still worried about underhood heat. Its not hard to fab up a piece of aluminum to make your own shield, and put some weatherstripping along the top to seal to the hood.

One thing you can be happy about, is that your paper element, disposable tymar filter element is a FAR superior filtering media. It might not flow quite as much as a washable filter, but it for sure filters BETTER. And since a diesel can move as much as 5 times more air than a comparable gasser engine, its imperitive to have the cleanest air you can get. Washable filters are notorious for small holes opening up in the filter media after just several washes.

Give some thought to how much air is moving through your engine compartment at road speed. I would agree that the underhood temps are high when the truck is sitting at idle, but the only time you are going to be concerned with temp is when you are working the truck, going down the road. I believe Dale has tested the IAT on his units, and found the increase in temperature to be small. The benefits of the additional airflow more than make up the small increase in air temp. I have a lot of confidence in Dale and his products, and he tests everything he sells.

no matter how much you block off the engine from teh filter the actual volume of air used by teh motor basically means it sucks air from everywhere and anywhere it wants too, be happy you only spent what you did. The other guys has no idea what he is actually talking about.

I've been considering the same investment.... Here is an interesting string. This one includes some cost / temp data. Here is the Baldwin site for reference. One thing I've seen is leaving the factory air channel that screws to the core support & fits to the factory air intake being left in place to help move outside air to filter - you may want to do this. All in all, I'm sold on Tymar until I read something from those that have one to the contrary.

I like my Tymar intake. Dale sells good stuff and takes the time to make sure it is good stuff.

One of the claims to fame is that the Donaldson filter element does a better job filtering than the reusable type element that brand Airbox uses. I dyno'ed my truck with the tymar and with the original version aFE (not the aFE II ProGard-7) and guess which one made 5-6 hp more over 3 pulls apiece than the reusable element one? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif Guess which one I use daily! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Guess what, I have more power and quicker spool with the AFE StageII then with the paper filter and it looks 100 times better then the Paper setup too.

I had a universal round K&N filter for about 500 miles, then it tore apart. Now I have a Tymar style and love it. Looks arn't nearly as important as filtering ability!

So, just how much more were you making? I did mine same day, same dyno so it was apples to apples.

Dave, I dont know how much HP it gained but I do know I feel the difference in 2 different trucks. I have no desire to Dyno to see if it made more I just know I feel it and thats what counts in my book. I also watch my Intake pipes and the are clean as a wistle.

Everyone who has tried the old and new aFEs has said the ProGard-7 one is much better, just wondering how much. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif My Psychodyno is so far off that IF I believed it, I'd have a 500 hp truck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif instead of the 400hp one the local Dynojet tells me I have! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
