My wife's truck has been missing when you apply throttle on hills. Black smoke and when you floor it it takes off and runs good. I cleaned the EGR and thought it helped a bit for a while. Yesterday coming home when I hit the hill it blew black smoke really bad and wouldn't clear up when floored. I turned around and pulled over at the bottom of the hill and unplugged the EGR. Back up the hill and all the way home it ran perfect, no codes. So I probably need a EGR valve, but is there any harm in running with it unplugged.

Yes. The cooling fan will not work properly without the EGR valve plugged in.

So does that mean if the sun ever comes out here the fan won't kick in. I watched the gauge yesterday and it never moved.

It'll kick in. Just not at the duty cycle that is should be.

DMac....dont recall this being mentioned before on fan/egr connection. Makes me wonder what/if any effect that has on those who have deleted egr? Just curious.

We do not have emission testing up here so I have a spool put in place of the EGR valve and the EGR valve is still plugged in but bolted to my intake. It would be nice if I could toss the EGR valve completely.

There's a thread on another site that "discovered" this. In particular, a Ford tech did some research with his IDS with the EGR both plugged in and unplugged. Long story short; the EGR doesn't work like it should when the EGR has been disconnected. Now that they know about it, tuners may be programming around this. But those guys that are still on a stock tune with the EGR unplugged could have problems.

I'll find the thread this evening and post the link.

I ran my truck with no egr for over a year. No serious issues, fan still works, keep a/c cycling etc. But last week I got a new egr and plugged it in laying it on the intake. What a difference. The fan does a full duty cycle as before was only running a partial cycle. I also ran a tuner and while they can write around the egr codes, they can't make that fan cycle 100% like it should with an egr plugged in, at least on my truck.

Exactly! That's what happens. It'll work; just at a lower duty cycle.

Rather than laying the EGR valve on it's side to bounce around maybe causing damage to the wiring harness, if you take the right-rear intake elbow bolt out and then put it thru the tab on the EGR valve the wiring to it is just long enough for it to be bolted in place. I actually cut the bottom inch or so off the EGR valve so it was well clear of things.

I am trying REALLY hard to understand what the EGR valve has to do with the cooling fan operation. Just don't make sence to me,,,o-well. I know I MUST do something because of all the failure problems with the EGR, I don't want to let it mess up my motor..

Thats just temporary to see if it actually made a difference and it did. Its going back in place on the intake when i get time.

May be of interest, after testing my van and truck (both have 6.0)with the egr plugged and unplugged.I found NO differance at all. I stoped by my local Ford dealer where i'm known well.and ask the diesel pro. about it. His reply was NO WAY it will make a difference in the cooling system fan cycle time.. I think maybe that with the EGR plugged in, it will dump more hot collant into the system to be cooled. With it unplugged (in the closed position) it will dam up the flow of HOT exhaust that would pass the EGR cooler therefore the fan doesn't run as much because there is less HOT coolant to process! This is as close as I can get to making sence of this issue.. PS..When I stopped by my ford dealer for a talk, as you would think they were replaceing a EGR coller and oil cooler!!! wouldn't you know it!!

Whoa there. The original poster is asking about an 04 truck and all of those who've responded have 06 trucks. As I understand it, on 03-04 models, you can unplug the EGR and no codes and such are thrown, but for 05+ trucks an unplugged EGR will throw codes. For 05+ trucks, a tuner is needed to delete the calls for EGR to get around this.

Now, with all of this in mind, are y'all trying to say that for even 03 & 04 trucks, unplugging the EGR will affect the fan's cycling?

(I wonder if my truck knows this?) :jester:
