I'm curious if anyone has successfully installed higher wattage halogen bulbs in the stock halogens?

I'm working on a project that will draw 80W and am wondering if the stock high beam circuit can handle it.

I've seen H13 bulbs for sale that are 80/120W so I'm hopeful it will work.

I never had much luck with higher wattage than stock halogen bulbs lasting very long at all.

My design is very convoluted but it would have 80W of aftermarket LEDs so I'm not worried about longevity.

I've run the SilverStar bulbs in my headlights. I do have relays installed to prevent all that current from running thru the headlight and multifunction switches, so I'm not worried about the circuit capacity.I also have mine set up for low beams on with high beams.
As has been mentioned, the longevity isn't very good.

W=VxA, so 80W is 5.5~7 Amps. The main light switch is on a 40A fuse, so the wiring is not the issue.

All the power (Watts) used by the bulbs becomes heat, and the bulb & housing are engineered to dissipate a given amount. If you put more heat into them, they get hotter. Theoretically, a bulb rated for more power would be engineered to handle it. But if you put it in a housing that can't, it'll still get hotter than it should, and won't last as long. It may also damage (melt/burn) the housing.

It becomes an even-bigger problem if you modify the circuit to keep the low beams on when the high beams are. Unless you replace the housings with some that have separate reflectors for low & high - then, it's usually OK to run both.

I tried this on my 04 and it turned the chrome a gold color in the housing... Too much heat and you have to use higher gauge wires
