Under another post (Turbo going south), I thought that my turbo was on its way out because when I hit 25 lbs of boost, I started hearing a shrill noise. As I pulled my trailer up the mountain passes, a couple of times it hit 30lbs when it downshifted - the noise got louder (I immediately shut off the cruise and got out of it).

I pulled the intake tube, got a hold of the wheel/shaft and could not get any movement in/out or side to side. Does that mean the turbo is fine?

I tightened all the boots on the cooler hoses to make sure that I am not getting a leak. There was a little oil near one of the boots, possibly a bit loose.

I did notice soot on the firewall by the uppipes. Can the uppipes make a shrill noise as the boost in the system is pushed up? I know I should replace them, but I'm just trying to determine what the noise was and where it came from.

Up-pipes won't make a nosie as you described. It's you're turbo headed south. 25-30 psi is towing hard, so you knew it was only a matter of time. When I broke my stock turbo, I checked for play and a couple of days later I snaped the shaft in half.

One of the times that my up-pipes were leaking bad enough that they made a horrible sound, so yes sometimes they can.

I spose that leaking uppipes will cause more turbo lag? I have my wastegate disconnected because it is slow to make boost. With it disconnected, it is much more responsive. Or, my wastegate is very weak (140,000 on the truck). Or, maybe I just have multiple things going on...not sure.
