I don't know about the automatic high idle feature, it could be related to battery charging sensing. I know that when I hit my high idle switch--and the batteries are low--the truck will idle higher until they are charged, then the idle drops down. The high idle setup is obviously an option and, depending on your application an desires, should be installed if you feel you need/want it. Good luck.

As you probably know, allowing your truck to idle at a "resting" idle RPM potentially allows fuel to pass into the crankcase and, thereby "making" oil. As you also know, there is a idle time indication available as part of the engine diagnostic readout. The high idle feature allows you to idle at a slightly higher RPM and reduce potential issues. I guess others use the high idle for PTO features?
High idle is not for warm up. These trucks need to be driven to warm up and won't warm up at idle. The high idle is to drive the alternators to support on-board power needs.

My '09 will high idle by itself when cold outside--currently on UT/AZ/NM trip and when I start it in the mornings to warm the inside up, the truck idles at 1300 until I hit the pedal, or get in and leave.
Has done this every time in cold climes and morning starts. Doesn't do it when home in TX so far.

Justplanekrazy...
If you have the 4-corner scare lights on the trailer, check to see if they have a reverse wire set up on them---mine is wired into the backup light circuit on my truck, and both rear corner lights come on when in reverse. Nothing special, all thru the 7-pole plug, trailer was wired that way. You might check on this...

Also consider adding fog lights to the rear of the trailor and you can tap into the backup circuit. I added them to the rear of my trailor and when backing in at night it does help light the area up.

... - Rewire holiday lights to make them 12V instead of 120V. ...
If you rewire them for 12 volts, you'll burn out a lot of lamps. The system voltage is closer to 15 volts, especially in the wintertime.
(a higher terminal voltage is required to coax a full charge into a cold battery)

I have a 100 gallon aux tank in the bed and I use one switch for a fuel solenoid valve and a fuel pump.

I have had my train horns for a little over 2 years and love them. My upfitter switches control the two compressors (on one switch), the fast idle, cb radio, electronic pressure gauge. Good luck.

My pics might help

I'm aware that this is a very old post but...
I want to use mine for my train horns and compressor but don't know where to start.

I used one to power an inverter and large transformer in the bed to supply the flux capacitor with 1.21 gigawatts which as you all know makes time travel possible.

Idling a diesel in the cold weather is tough on it, even harder on it at low idle, it idles too cold. The built in high idle sometimes works, but some situations, not as good. Also A/C in the summer runs much better if the truck is idled up.

If it's not good to idle cold, am I better off to start up and hit the road? I had assumed that and idle warm up is not bad or at least better than not any warm up. Thoughts?

2 Air Compressors (480c Viair)
Air Pressure gauge

We have shocker air horns and they are great. Look at my pics for the install.

How do you get to the upfitter switches? Want to hook up back up lights and a back up camera. On a 2008 F-450. Do you have to take the cup holder off??
DO a quick search there are multiple wright ups on it and very good pics posted on where to access em. but right behind the drivers kick panel there are 4 capped off wires of varying cullers which go to each switch.

Electric shut off for auxiliary fuel tank in truck box, high idle, and a 'master' power to accessories like GPS, radar detector, and cell phone/BB charger. I hate all those cigarette lighter plugs hanging all over the place.
If I cant do the foglights w/high beam mod on my 08, I will use one to power my fogs so I can control when they are on. I cant seem fo find anyone who has made the mod work on the 6.4 trucks.
I made my factory driving lights stay on with the high beams with a relay and some wire.
