Hey everyone...i just cut off the muffler of my truck until i get stacks, but I was wondering what the law was about having a muffler on a diesel in VA. Is it illegal to cut off the muffler in VA although I did leave the cat on. When I do my exhaust do I have to make sure it has to have some sort of muffler in VA. I do not need any more tickets! I've had my 7.3 straight piped with a 5inch exhuast for almost a year now and no tickets and i pass cops all the time. Also it passed Va state inspection and they crawled all around under my truck. So i'm pretty sure you should be fine.

ya all those damn dmv sites are confusing! I guess i will have to go back to Twisted Diesel and check with them.....I will let you know though after I find out.

I work for VA state police... technically it is illegal to modify your exhaust so that it emmits any sound above a factory or comparable system... Va does not enforce this during safety inspections as they dont other things such as window tint and hood scoops.. Most troopers don't bother with trucks unless they are ungodly loud like a strait piped 7.3 non turbo. we concentrate on the "tin can" mufflers on rice burners.

I wouldnt worry about it at all, but just remember that it is possible to get a ticket for it, especially if you are doing something else to attract police attention. Even if you do get a ticket its only a $30 fine and does not cost you any points on your license.

i put on my exhaust about 3 yrs ago and didnt even put on my muffler its just a 4" straight pipe and it sounds good expecially when you get down on it

Thanks officer! Ya i went down to the shop the other day and they said it would pass inspection as it was...Odd laws in VA! I really want to run twin 6in stacks. Do you think I would attract to much of that attention if I did that. I do have window tint that isn't legal so I know that doesnt help. I dont normally hot rod the truck b/c i dont need to! Its a truck, im not going to race anyone........

stacks help mellow the sound out and depending on style project the sound away from the ground so it sounds quieter than under truck exit. shouldn't be a problem..


make sure you have a good 50% tint on the front sides and nothing on windshield below AS-1 line... the rest doesnt matter on trucks and suvs.I dont know abut SE but tint is enforced pretty hard in Northen Va and my face lights up when I see 15% on the front

you never know, if you get stopped for speeding or something else and polite to officer and he is in good mood, he may warn you on speed and ticket for equipment.. i'd take that over speed anyday!.. beware though it could also backfire if officer gets the wrong vibe from you and you could get 3 tickets instead of 1, you just never know

Ya i just recently got pulled for 70/55...even though i passed the officer going 60. He said someone else clocked me doin 70 down the road. Is that even legal. Gave me a ticket for unlawful tint...my front was legal...and I thought the rest didnt matter but....I have 9% on the passenger windows and then negative on the back. Also I had a Twisted Diesel sticker on the back, which is a diesel performance shop here in Hampton Roads, and so he crawled under my truck to check for illegal exhaust. Hadnt done the muffler delete then! Thanks for the incite on my questions!
