Hello all! I'm new to this forum and I'd like to thank you for a great site!I have a question about vacuum pumps. Is it possible to rebuild them? The only indications that mine is bad are stiff brake peddle and the heater controls don't work until I'm doing about 75mph and the engine is wound out to 3000rpm. I don't have a vaccum gauge to test the system. As for the stiff brakes, I replaced the master cylinder last year and the problem didn't change. I'm assuming no vacuum to booster. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

pull the line to the booster from the vac pump with the motor running see if there is a vacum. if there isnt just spend the 90 bucks and slap on a new one with a lifetime warranty. think about it 40 bucks to rebuild it? when it breaks again you spend another 40 to replace it and then again maybe. why not just spend 90 bucks that youll never spend again.

First do the vacuum test on my gallery......borrow a vacuum/pressure gage or buy one about $20.

Rebuilding is Cardone's job......... make sure you rent/borrow from a parts store the correct pulley puller/installing tool.

If you have low vacuum, the dash "Brake" red light should come on. If it's not, you may have two problems: the vacuum problem and the indicator problem (light or vacuum switch).

Before going for a pump, you might try to narrow down the problem: is the pump faulty, or has the vacuum manifold ("tree") cracked and developed a leak, or maybe a line's become knocked off. A cheap vacuum gauge ($15 new, probably $5 at a thrift store) and a pair of pliers to pinch off hoses would be a better investment first, than a new pump.
