I have owned my 2004 F350 for two weeks. It has 65,225 miles on it. I just went to the horse supply store and drove home with 5 square bails and a 25lbs bag of chicken feed. maybe total of 225lbs. The truck began doing it's beeping/whistling thing as posted earlier (which I haven't figured out yet) and I noticed the oil temp gage was very high...almost to the red block above the "H". I was being chased by a storm and kept driving. The gage would drop and rise periodically. I finally got home and shut the truck off while I was putting the hay up and the chicken feed. Got in the truck started it up and a huge cloud of black smoke came out the exhaust pipe. Drove it to it's parking spot and came in to contact the dealer. Sent pics to the salesperson who seems pretty knowledgeable. Waiting to hear back about what they want me to do as it did come with a 1 year bumper to bumper nationwide 50/50 warranty. I have no gages other than the factory gages. What do you think is wrong? How much damage do you think I am going to have to get fixed. I have heard wowes of the 6.0l and the EGR and Oil Cooler. Do you think I can get the "Bulletproof" lifetime warrantied egr and oil cooler out of it?

I would take it in and have them check the coolant and oil temp the oil should not get more than 15 degrees hotter than the coolant. also check fuel pressure it should be 65psi+ under 45psi can damage the injectors. the best thing is to get your own gauges so the you know and the dealer can't tell you different.

Sounds like the oil cooler is bad to me. Hopefully they can give you a new oil cooler and egr and you will be fixed. If they won't do anything would you consider ridding the truck of the egr? I just did and replaced the oil cooler at same time. Parts were only $420. I got the cooler from Toulsey, egr from RCD.

Make sure the temp sending unit is accurate. They do fail from time-to-time.

So...reading the book, there is supposed to be coolant in the reservoir. Looking under the hood in the reservoir, there is no coolant. May have found part of the culprit. However, I would really like to know where it went. I bought the truck from a reputable dealer only two weeks ago. They are in another state, but that shouldn't be an issue as the warranty is nationwide. Hope we get the problem solved. And as for the question about the erg delete...I would really rather not. If it came down to it, I would rather pony up the money for the bulletproof diesel egr so as to not throw codes. I will update when I get resolution.

Um, there is no engine oil temperature gauge on your truck. That gauge indicates transmission fluid temperature. Once the dealership looks at it, they should be able to diagnose the problem. I would suspect that P0713 is stored in memory, and the transmission fluid temperature sensor is failing.

As for the puff of black smoke, and the lack of coolant in the jug, make sure to mention that to the dealership too..

Sorry...again I have owned the truck for two weeks and am not entirely familiar with it as I don't get to drive it much, and I have never had a diesel prior to this. I have a company vehicle and company gas for work so the truck pretty much sits in the yard by the horse paddock until I need it. With the drive from Orlando, FL to Columbia, SC and the local driving, I may have put 600 miles on it. All that to say yes...the coolant temp gauge. The one in the bottom right corner. It took about 3 gallons of 50/50 distilled water and "Fleet Charge" brand coolant so that I can get it to the dealership. That was the only brand of diesel coolant I could find locally other than "Peek" which said for 2000 and older Ford diesels. I ran it in the yard, while I hosed off the dust and greased the hidden ball in the bed, and it's no longer running hot. Took it down the road and it seems to be holding steady in the middle of the gauge. Dropping it off at Ford on Sunday evening and the diesel guy said he should be able to pull it in on Monday and diagnose the problem so he can contact the FL dealership for approval and get working on it. Glad it has a warranty. Hope all the problems I have out of it occur within this first year of ownership, while under warranty, and they get fixed!

Nope. It doesn't appear that it is being pushed out of the degas reservoir. I dropped it off this afternoon and put the keys in the drop box. Out of curiosity i popped the hood and there is no coolant again in the reservoir. Oh well...guess it'll have to be fixed. and if they want to do it with ford parts, and its covered under warranty...I guess that's what will be done. I hear that the stock oil cooler is good with the bulletproof egr cooler. Hope they will let me pay the difference for the bulletproof vs the stocker. I don't wanna keep having problems. I'll post what I find out.

So...the local dealership called me this morning. According to them it's the EGR cooler and oil cooler. They said $2800. They then contacted the original dealership who I purchased the truck from who also holds the warranty...well, of course the dealerships don't see eye to eye. The dealership I purchased it from is requesting the diagnostic printout from the dealership here because they say they ran diagnostics pre sale that don't agree with the diagnostics here, but the dealership here says they are not required to send the information to the dealership in Florida. So now, the dealership here has my truck and the dealership there is not willing to authorize the repairs to the dealership here. So I guess I'm gonna have to go pay the dealership here for the diagnostics work just to take it somewhere else and have them diagnose it again. YAY! and the fun continues...

The FL dealership paid the diagnostics this morning and told me to take it somewhere else. I found a diesel mechanic who is BBB certified and uses nothing but Superduty diesels in his line up of fleet vehicles. I got to talking with him. He is able to fix it with parts required under it's ridiculous warranty for much less than either of the Ford dealership's I was able to get quotes from could. Guess I'll just have to wait for the parts I want. I am just hoping to get my truck back in the near future.

So is your warranty covering the repairs or are you out of pocket now? I just did an egr delete and a new oil cooler. The cooler came from Toulsey Ford(a sponser) and was by far the best price out there.

At the current, I will more than likely have to pay about half of the repair. The warranty is 50/50. However, I am going to argue up one end and down the other because it has been less than 2 weeks of ownership prior to the issue becoming visible. I only put about 700 miles on it driving from Florida and then driving here locally. They Ford dealership here was amazed that the dealership I purchased it from has denied that it was their responsibility, stating they did all diagnostic testing pre sale. However, no one here says that diagnostics can show this problem. They have said some vacuum test or something is the only way to diagnose it.

Have you considered getting rid of the EGR system?

Glad things are working out. Have the mechanic check the head gasket now to see if they have lifted.

Yeah. I spoke with them yesterday and asked how much it would cost me out of pocket since they were already in there to go ahead and change the head gaskets and put in arp studs. They said they would get back to me. What should that cost at that point? I know arp studs are like $400...
