Howdy,
I'm having a charging system issue, any help would be great, me and others haven't been able to figure it out. I'm going to give all the info simply because this one is a doozy
The truck: 1990 Ford F250 7.3 IDI
1st symptom - battery light was coming on
tested the alternator - it was bad
I replaced it with a new one from the parts store. *I did not replace the external voltage regulator on the passenger side fender. I thought maybe it would be alright without replacing that too. Everything was great for about a month (daily driver). battery light no longer on
then...
2nd symtpom - the voltage regulator on the dash starts going crazy every once in a while and when the volts drop, the battery light comes on. So I take it in to have it tested at the local parts store. Both batteries test good, alternator tests good, voltage regulator said it needed to be replaced.
I replaced it with a new one from the parts store. Everything was great! battery light no longer on.
then....
3rd symptom - two days later battery light comes on again. plenty of juice. fluctuates a little between 12-16 volts according to the dash depending on the load (lights, heater, etc). lights are bright, heater is powerful, radio is loud, power is there.
Conclusion: Batteries=good alternator=good voltage regulator= gone through 2
and battery light is now on again.
Thanks in advance.
