OK, here goes. This has been happening randomly. I turn the key on and the wait to start light DOES NOT come on and the check engine light comes on and stays illuminated. It does not flash a code. The truck will not start when it does this. I can walk away and come back later and it's like nothing has happened. Wait to start light comes on and the truck starts up. A couple other times the wait to start light comes on while driving down the road and while the truck does not die when this happens hit the throttle and nothing happens. Anyone got any ideas on where to look? I've heard a shorted out fuel heater could cause it. Does that sound correct or am I headed down the wrong road?

A shorted fuel heater will generally blow underhood fuse 22 and leave you dead in the water. That is not always the case, so you could try unplugging it and see if the symptoms clear. If the CEL came on, a code (or codes) should have been set. You'll need a good diagnostic scanner to check them (you don't count flashes on these trucks some aftermarket tuners can read codes as well). Since you do have a chip, I would be looking there first to see if it needs to be reseated and secured. Don't mess with the chip while the truck is running or the key is ON!!!!. Cheers!

I took my truck down to autozone and their code reader did not show any stored codes. It was some type of actron model. Do those not work very well or something?
You got it!! While the PSD has an OBD II connector, it is not OBD II compliant when it comes to code readers. You will have to find a shop or person with the right scanner or software to retrieve PSD codes. AutoEnginuity is the preferred software for the DIYer.

well, we finally got my dad's laptop program to sync up and connect and there were no stored codes. I am confused now as to what it could be. Going to try taking out the chip and replace the glow plug relay tomorrow and see if that helps.

I think I may have solved the mystery tonight. I checked the valve cover gasket where the connections to the glow plugs and injectors is. They were mostly burned and broken. I did that job on this truck within a year after I bought it. Only then did it dawn on me that was over 10 years ago. I'll call the international dealer in the a.m. and see if they have the parts in stock.

yup, those valve cover gaskets were the culprit. Both of the connections on the inside of the passenger bank were completely melted. I have no idea how the thing even ran. I've had this truck 10 years now and this is the 2nd time I've had to make this repair. Stupid set up imo but at least all is well and she's running again.
