hey guys

My wastegate tends to open up while i'm driving in the cold, regardless of if it's been plugged in or how long it warms up. if i shut the truck off after driving and go to restart within an hour or 2 of being off it will not open. this is on an auto 1996 f350 7.3 psd. it's very annoying, loud and causes the EGTs to run high at low speed and will shut once i give it more throttle, but will then open up again. not sure what the cause of this is. my buddy that has a 97 7.3 does not experience the same issue. if anyone has knowledge of the cause of this please let me know.

It isn't a waste gate it is a back pressure valve to aide in warming the truck up. You can disconnect it and wire it open with no problems. Usually just unplugging the power to it will set it in the open position.

even with this being the case, would it cause me to lose all boost from the turbo?

When the EBPV is closed, it is hard to build boost. The flap in the exhaust restricts the turbo from pushing all the exhaust air out quickly. This reduction in flow means the turbine wheel can not spin and speed up like normal. This, in turn, results in low boost.

Also... OBS trucks do not have a wastegate on the factory turbo. Just an FYI.

When this happens, it's not even low boost. It's no boost. the valve will open and close rapidly causing the turbo to spool, dump the pressure, respool, dump the pressure and so on. i can't imagine that being any good for the turbo..?

also this turbo is aftermarket.
with the past few days being about 40-50 degrees in my area i have not been experiencing the issue

You need to figure out what is causing the valve to malfunction. Should not be closed under load. Is your EBP sensor in good working order?

Which aftermarket OBS turbo do you have? Was not aware of any OBS turbo's (stock or aftermarket) that had a wastegate.

You need to check the ebpv sensor numbers to see if it is functioning correctly as was just said, if not functioning correctly, then you need to undo the sensor and see how clogged up the ebpv tube is where you just took the sensor out of. Sensor and tube are located in the front the motor on the passenger side where the top of your serpentine belt is. If your lucky you can take a air nozzle, and blow 150psi through that tube from the sensor side into the exhaust, and it will unclog. If your not so lucky youll have to stick a 1/16 tig welding rod in a drill, and run it thought the tube like a giant flexible drill bit, or something else as a snake, to clear it out. Then you need to check that tube for leaks, spray it down real good with soapy water, make sure to check carefully at the bends, and blow air through the tube again and check for bubbles.. If your definitely not lucky you found some holes in that tube, so now you need to replace the tube, and sensor from riffraf.. Also get some kroil penetrating lube and spray down your ebpv on the back of the turbo, (it looks just like a wastegate) let soak for 20 mins and give it a good workout with a pair of vice grips just like a sticky throttle linkage.. that should free it up so it doesnt get stuck anymore..

I think ATS sold an aftermarket turbo with a wastegate. IIRC, I think longtime member Kevin Ferguson had one on his OBS. I managed to find this post in the archives: "ATS wastegated turbo upgrade"

Cheers!

True, but if a guy honestly doesn't know... I'm not sure he has a wastegated turbo. Would a waste gate sticking open or closed cause high EGT's? All a wastegate does is optn to dump excess exhaust pressure in order to lower intake boost. I don't see how that would build EGTs. A picture would be great.

No boost would mean extremely high EGT'S.
