OK - so I too have been bitten by a totally stripped drain plug. The 6mm wrench just spins. What tricks have you guys used to get it out. There is not alot of space between the plug and drive shaft. Also, I thought I read a post that had a part # for a new plug that utilizes a open end wrench. Any idea? Thanks

Updated plugs are steel and still use the 6mm allen wrench.

You can drop the front driveshaft out of the way and use a cold chisel to give the plug some ideas.... then tap a (IIRC) T45 into the plug. If that doesn't work, new manifolds come with the updated steel plug.

Just remembered.... Manifold gaskets are now available separately.... Removing the manifold should make plug removal easier... pick up a gasket when you pick up the new plug.

Thanks Grampy Jim - So I just unbolt the manifold, let the fuel drain and then work the plug out on a workbench? Anything special I should be aware of when removing and re-installing the manifold?

I agree with Grampy Jim, I would pick up a new steel plug
P/N 3C3Z-9A214-AB first, then try to use a chisel and hammer to break loose the old stripped brass plug and if that does not work, drop the drive shaft and use a large EZ-OUT to break it loose and replace it with the new steel plug.
Good Luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Last time I drained mine, the threads from the manifold came out with the plug. I went to the dealer and bought a HFCM repair kit that consisted of a new side cover including the plug, sensor, gasket & screws. It cost $58. Took about 10 minutes to change.
I'd give you the part number, but the receipt is at work. If you need, I can get it Monday.

Good thing you asked.... at the top of the cavity under the cover is the DTRM.. There's a black plastic piece holding in, amongst other things, a couple of springs..... These have been known to pop out and can be a biatch to get back in on the truck. All the stuff only fits one way and can pop out if you fiddle with it.

JRC702 - That kit part number would be helpful. Grampy Jim - does the kit JRC702 references save me the hassle of loose springs etc? Ten minutes sounds pretty cool. With all this, I assume none of this gets covered under warranty...

Were you over the 3/36? I thought the HFCM was covered under the 100k engine warrenty as part of the fuel system? 'Course over the 3/36 there is the $100 deductible.

What's covered and what's not can be cloudy so I leave that to the warranty clerk and pray my paycheck gets me through what I need.

The manifold kit does expose us to the possibility of having the DTRM pop out. If you go with the kit, don't dilly-dally.... remove the old cover and install the new one quickly. New screws are provided with the manifold.... 1/4" socket works just dandy...

There'll be four fuel lines to disconnect and ay least two electrical connectors. It can be a chore if you run in a lot of clay. Undoing the fuel pump connection makes for more room.. that would be the third coonector..

hmmmm... I can just imagine not getting my PSD out of the garage because I missed a spring. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I am well within the 3/36 but I dont suppose that covers stipped plugs?

Yes! Go get your dealer to do it, that's what the warranty is for. It's a thoroughly known problem, with an improved part (steel plug) as the solution.

Funny thing you mention... My water in fuel light came on last Sunday. I follwed the directions 6mm hex, counterclockwise and the brass fitting stripped with ease. Called the dealer 27k on truck, and the mentioned that it is common and replaced the whole assembly... The catch was paying the 145 bucks for the new fuel filters.

Enjoy!

Reading through my owners manual on my 06 I see that Ford has done away with the plug and gone to a lever to drain the HFCM.

i save a whole bunch of b.s. and use one of the water dispercents sold at the local truck stop. the water lite came on once and went out soon after the stuff was in the tank. now the tank gets a little of the dispercent every 1,000 miles.

You might want to look carefully at how that stuff works. If it helps the water get through the filter and into the engine, it could be a Very Bad Thing. Our expensive injectors really don't like water. The best strategy is to stop the water and remove it, which is what the HFCM does. All it asks is that you spend a little effort draining it off now and again.

Ahh... you would think that the level would be there. Crawl under the drivers door and check. My 05 manual speaks of the mysterious "lever" but alas, I have a drain plug also.

Good point. Now that "Job 2 2005" came and went without the mythical lever and MY2006 is upon us, I suppose it's time to ask the question again:

Can someone with a 2006 truck crawl under there and tell us if the HFCM has a drain plug or a drain lever?

As soon as this thing shows up on production trucks, I'll be down at my dealer trying to order one to retrofit to my 2003 truck...

Same here as far as the valve.
I just got back from my dealer and while there, gave the parts guy the aforementoned part number for the steel drain plug. He had none, told me it wasn't a Ford part number, and said he probably wouldn't be getting sny.

Time to ask another dealer.

On Edit:

I was checking the aftermarket forum, Steve with an '06 says his manual indicates a valve. Maybe he'll report back with a verification of valve /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif or plug /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
