Okay, I ran out of fuel today on the way to work but luckily, I keep a small auto parts store in the trunk of my car. Soooooo, I tossed in about a gallon and a half of new 10w 30 oil and finished the drive. The fuel filter was a nice golden color, showing that I had pure oil in the lines but I had absolutely NO smoke. None. None at idle, none while driving, and none when I floored it.

Now, my car smokes on anything, especially straight D2. Why didnt it smoke today on pure oil?

Im thinking it bought some nicotine patches.

First of all what do you have for a powerplant in the mercedes?
Also, new oil will smoke as it is condensed and will flow through the injectors like warm honey. There might be residue left over even after running the D2. Is it a constant thick black smoke or sporatic whiffs of smoke? Try using a fuel additive such as howes mean cleaner etc and see what that does. Best of luck :thumbsup:

Was the new 10w30 oil blended with gasoline?
Usually white smoke is caused by lower combustion temperatures and the main culprit is fuel starvation.

The most common WMO used is 15w40 which would be slightly more restrictive at the filter.
There are other issues like fuel atomisation that rear their ugly head on W85.
The first thing we do is blame the oil, because logically it went away when you changed the oil.
All the issues I've had looked like a fuel problem , but they were existing long before the WMO was ever used.

My only explanation for the no smoke is the engine was hot when he put the 10w 30 oil into his fuel tank. My guess is his engine will smoke like hell when he starts it cold.

Before you guys flame me, We are all guessing on the internet with incomplete information supplied
Please look at this logically.

He is comparing CLEAN OIL with CLEAN DIESEL !
It smokes on Diesel but not on Oil [ we are assuming its white smoke, because we never complain of black smoke ]

It is running colder combustion on Diesel than on Oil
Oil has a higher heat value [ BTU ] than diesel for the same volume

I am GUESSING that there is a slight fuel restriction for both fuels, but the higher heat value of oil is saving the combustion temps dropping off.
The fuel filter is probably on the "tippy toe" edge of plugging.

If he put a new filter on this vehicle [or a helper lift pump] it will "probably" run fine on diesel , but black smoke a lot more on oil.

Okay, it has a non-turbo 3 liter 5 cylinder engine with 350k miles on it.
Ive been burning D2 for awhile because my oil supply was lousy. No residual W85.
The engine was relatively cold because I ran out a mile down the road from my house and it was the first drive of the day.
I didnt add any gas. Do you think I keep gas in the trunk of my diesel?
And I had a relatively new filter. Not plugged. Ive been there before and this wasnt it.

Anywho. I get gray smoke on D2 and none on 10W40 SMO.
