I did a search with not much results, more then likely user error /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway I recently installed a Edge with Attitude monitor (running on level 1) and my EGT's seem to be all over the place an very high. Just climbing the hill up to my house I see 800-900 degrees. Cruzing down the freeway is at least 700 and towing a ~4000 trailer up a very long and very steep hill in the mountains is just over a 1000. If I am hitting a 1000 with only 4000# what is going to happen when I hitch up my fully loaded 11,000# Toy Hauler? Are these normal or did I install the prob wrong or is something broken? FYI at idle I see 350-400 and I installed the probe on the driver side right at the bend of the manifold before turning up to the turbo.

Vehicle is an 05 Excursion 6.0.

I don't think your numbers seem far off of what I see, pyro is installed in the manifold on my truck.

I've never seen a definite ceiling posted here, and I've asked before and searched. I personally get antsy holding the EGT's over 1200, but that's not based on any hard facts.

jjtor,

Your EGT's are exactly in line with what I see running my dad's F-350 so don't fret. I can get to 950 - 1000 just climbing a good hill empty. I find that towing the EGT's don't seem to change much from empty unless you get into some good hills. Just set the backdown to 1250 and forget about it. The attitude will look after keeping your EGT's in tack by backing off as far as stock and a stock motor is not supposed to overheat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

On edit I forgot to mention that these temperatures are at 3-3. Punch it for fun and you will see EGT's hit 1200 pretty quick.

Those numbers are pretty well in line with what they should be. Like was posted above, towing doesn't have that drastic of an affect on them. I pulled a buddies truck (his truck and the trailer weighed in at 11,000lbs, without including my truck) to BTS with mine. There are some pretty good hills going down that way and my EGTs were not out of line at all. Apparently, even though this engine runs hotter empty than the 7.3, it doesn't run any hotter towing.

One more thing, the edge seems to read about 100 degrees high. 1200 is actually 1100. Also at 1272 degrees, aluminum starts to glow. however, that is the temperature of the aluminum, not the air passing across it. In other words, the transient temperature of the air will take time to transfer the heat to the blades. if you held the throttle at 1272 degrees, it might take 20-30 seconds for the material to reach the same temp.

I have run mine to 1450 degrees on a hard run, but only for a second or two. The temperature of the turbine, (turbo) blades probably never reached above 1000 degrees. A good safe target is to set your edge, or if you have regular gauges, your foot, at a cutoff temperature of 1250. Then you are never going to get your temps above an "sustained" unsafe limit.

Just my .02

I agree with everyone here. Your temps seem normal to me. About maximum egt - I read here somewhere that 1300 degrees is ok for very short time and 1350 is the absolute limit where steel starts to melt off of the vane tips.

Great information. Now I not only know that the EGT's are in line, but also WHY 1250 should be the limit. Cool info, thanks to all.

[/ QUOTE ]Great question! We all seem to agree that about 1250 is all we want to see in our diesels but I cruise my airplane at 1400 all day as per the mfgrs recomendation. Whats up with that?

Your airplane may have ceramic coated components which reflect the heat away from the aluminum. Truck components don't have any ceramic coating and therefore absorb the heat faster (which could lead to melting/deformation of the metal).
