I have a featherlite horse trailer I pull anywhere from 15,000-17,000 lbs with the truck and mods in my signature. I have a US gears exhaust brake which I like when pulling the trailer it will slow down my truck to 35 mph then it becomes ineffictive unless you shift down. ALso who do you go to install your performance mods.

I tow a 8500lb bumper pull travel trailer, a real bread box on wheels, but we enjoy it.
I don't need the mods I have done to pull this weight I just like tweaking things!!!! Next will be a DP tuner with stock, 40 tow and 80 econo. Unless you are towing in the rockies or extremely heavy I don't see a need for a exhaust brake. I have used my cruise control set at 50 coming down Fancy Gap mountain and it kept the truck from racing down the hill. I don't know if this is OK but it seemed to work just fine!!
For the other poster, I do all my own mods, don't trust anybody to touch my truck, sad but true!!!

All my mods are geared to tow. My fiver goes about 13K and I tow it everywhere. The exhaust brake works great, I hardly have to use my brakes on a long grade, I thought Fancy gap was big until I tow through Colorado. Wolf creek pass is very nice to look at, steep but nice.
I saw one guy burn off his brakes on a gas truck with a TT. It was metal to metal on the trailer.

All mods in sig, I pull a heavy ass Stidham 24' enclosed full of race car, 2- 4 wheelers, 30 gals of fuel and tons of support equipment (need a bigger trailer) This is one pullin' machine, egts never top 1100 in 95+ heat at 80mph.

Mods in sig to pull a 33' toy hauler that weighs about 13K. As for the exhaust brake,, I gutted my EBV to lower EGTs (whether or not it helped is debatable) so an EBV style exhaust brake is out for me. When I got my chip from Jody, I was pleased to find that it kept the TC locked while coasting/braking etc down to about 30ish mph. Prior to the chip, I had a BD torque lock, which worked well, but you had to remember to turn it off and on. Just the addition of keeping the TC locked was enough for me. I travel Donner pass quite a bit and rarely have to use my brakes.

Always on the look out for more goodies though.

7k pounds on the baby fiver.

Maybe 1k pounds extra in the truck.

I like a little added power as I live in a very hilly area and do climb passes.

I have no complaints with my brakes so I am not going to mess with exhaust brakes.

With mods as noted below, I pull a 32' Fleetwood travel trailer (bumper mount) weighing a max of 8700 lbs (mine weighs about 8100 when setup for a long trip). Add to that about 700 lbs of passengers and a generator. Combined weight is about 16000 lbs.

As for the ol' fiver vs. bumper argument, I prefer a bumper mount for the simple reason that I need my bed for other goodies, including my son's race kart. There are absolutely no issues (sway, etc) in my truck's towing stability, so even if I did'nt have a need for the bed, I'm still not sure I'd get a fiver. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I pull a 31' fifth Wheel at @ 10K lbs. I used to have a 30' travel trailer and I believe the 5th wheeler pulls much better. I have the mods listed below and like Richter69 I can pull at 80 MPH easily with EGT's staying at or under 1100 degrees. I love having the extra power entering the highway or if I need to pass someone. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

bumper pull at 10k of trailer is equal to 5th wheel or gooseneck at 14k of just trailer.

yeah, if things are right 10k is kind of managable, but gooseneck sure is nicer.

I pull a 35' fifth and I would own nothing but. Pickup pulled fine but I did the mods anyway. Mods in signature. The trailer weights about 10-11K plus the gear in the truck and I can't notice anything negative.
