It failed because it didnt have the "new buzz flash" that the 6.0's have. and the egr valve was just clogged up. but allmost 85k miles on both egr and injectors and that truck is still kickin it...Their are good 6.0's out their just gotta look.
p.s. This truck was my dads truck until about 18mo. ago. the had the two injectors replaced and the egr. the said it failed cuz of not having the buzz flash.
The "buzz flash" has been updated to the "inductive heating flash" (06E17). This is to help with cold starting. Another major cause of injector failures for these trucks is low fuel pressure.
The EGR can be helped by allowing the truck to fully warm up and run for long distances whenever possible. Short runs, start / stop & excessive idling (over 5 mins) can lead to lowered performance of the EGR, and require frequent cleanings of it and the manifold.
Probably the best thing you can do for a 6.0 is to use it for what it was designed to do - tow medium loads over long distances on a regular basis. Get it out every week if you can't drive it every day and run it for at least a half hour at a time, preferably in the 1.5 to 2k rpm range. This will burn off any acids & water that form, and keep the batteries charged. It'll keep the fluids & lubricants where they need to be.
If you're not going to be towing 6 to 15k#s in varied terrain, up some steep grades, then maybe a gasser V-10 would be a better truck. If you get a good 6.0 you should see economy in the 17 range unloaded, and the older V-10's will be in the 12-14 range.
