As you might have read on my other post on this forum I had my tranny rebuilt about 7000 miles ago and it is gone bad again. OD is going out and so is reverse. What should I ask the guy about the first rebuild and why it didn't last but this short time. Got to go in the morning and want to be prepared. Thanks!!

Until the trans is opened up, the cause may never be discovered... Even then it can often depend on how much damage there is...

If something like this is caught early, we can find out why and avoid a repeat failure.... If it is driven to near destruction, things can get tough.

A local shop here in north Alabama. He has the best reputation in this area and when I took the truck back this morning he was very appologetic about it and said he would take it back down and repair whatever was necessary. Test drove the truck and said he thought the 3rd gear clutch pack was where the problem was. He is supposed to take it down tomorrow and I will let you all know what he found. He said he rarely had a comeback on these tranny's. So far, nothing to complain about.

Update on post. Jus't got back from tranny shop. This guy was very cooperative and very nice and helpful. Took full responsibility for the problem. Said he thought a small piece of cluth material was left from the 1st rebuild and got into the 3rd gear clutch drum and caused the problem. Said he replaced the 3rd gear cluthces and the reverse clutch pack, put in new shift kit in the valve body and changed fluid and filter, no charge. Couldn't ask for better service than that. Drove the truck home from shop and it shifts better than it did before the 1st rebuild.. If anyone in this area needs tranny service I would certainly recommend this shop. It is Smith Transmission in Athens, AL. Chris Smith is the owner. Customer service like this is hard to find these days. Guess everything worked out for the best. Thanks for all the replies on this thread.

Sounds like you need a Magnefine filter in the return line between the coolers and the tranny if the coolers were not replaced during the rebuild. Ford found this out the hard way and requires this filter which catches "little pieces of clutch material".
