I have just about 60k and I haven't looked at the brakes yet. I thought I heard a slight squeak the other day so it is probably about time to look into this. Also, I have a slight wobbler when applying the brakes hard, I figured if I go with high end rotor, I'll have less chance of the wobble. It seems like the OEM pads are the ticket still. Just curious if most are replacing rotors with slotted rotors or staying OEM. I am interested in slotted rotors but don't have any experience. The EBC's seem to be mid-high quality. Do you require any special tools for the job? For example, I've heard some rear disc brakes require a special tool to put caliper back in due to E brake. Any tips on getting caliper back in besides using a C clamp like I always do while letting out the fluid from the bleeder valve? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

1 more ?- Any recommendations on a good on-line store?

ART! done it twice on two Xs and would do it again

They may be using a different pad now, I ahve the Performance Friction Pads that tend to lack performance when cold but when warm or hot they will stand the X on it's nose, well almost.

I've got Friction Performance pads, and rotors from Carolina Clutch, a sponsor here on TDS.... Tom Haus did a good job by me, recommending them, as he uses them on his Excursion....
I've still got a little bit of chatter, after 30-40K miles on them, but it's NO problem.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Anyone ever been able to compare PowerSlot Cyro's to ART's? I've gotten by for quite some time but I know I'll get tired of the brakes soon. Need to get the ^&^%$#* sticky turbo fixed first and make sure I feel comfortable spending more money on it.

What about pricing? I think PS's are about $150-$175 per?

Thanks for info guys. I'll probably pull a couple wheels off this week to check how much pad I have left. With 4 wheel disc, do they all seem to need replacing or do fronts usually go fist?

MY fronts have always gone first and the rears second...unfortunately for me the rears have gone without warning to the point the caliper, pads AND the rotor had to be replaced...this was on the F350 but check your ex anyway..

I never heard a noise until it was too late and had brake fluid leaking out of the caliper resulting in a complete loss of brakes!

I just replaced the rear everything on my Excursion. The left rear caliper had one piston stick and destroyed the rotor. The rear calipers and rotors come off the same way the fronts do, no special tools required, however if you want to replace the parking brake shoes you will need to remove the hub because of the lack of clearance for one stinking coil spring! My X has 105,000 miles on it and the parking brake pads were perfect, but the parking brake actuator arm was frozen with rust and it was difficult to set the parking brake so the hub had to be removed. Decided to replace the bearings as well, 7 years with no problems, hoping for an additional 7!

To remove the hub you need a Ford hub locknut wrench (got mine at autozone AMPRO T72041 $22.00). If you change the bearings you will need a suitable bearing race driver or small press (Harbor Frieght has a 12 ton china made frame press for $199.00). The last thing you need is a friend at the Ford parts department! Total bill for 2 rotors, 2 loaded calipers, set of parking brake shoes, parking brake hardware kit, 2 oil seals, 4 bearing cups and races was $752.00 and the hope for another 7 years - free.

Wow, I thought I'd see more talk about the PowerSlots. I've read about ART's being good, but not always easy or quick to get but always heard the PowerSlots were the cats meow.

I've also always been steered away from drilled rotors in this application. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Don't know who it was but One person DID manage to warp his NON cryo treated rotors powerslots as I recall I think, I would have to search.

So I don't think that is a good compairison since ART cryo treats all rotors

Link to older brake thread and warped NON cryo treated rotorspowerslots Link to more info

Another older link on Cryoed Rotors

ART may be using hawk pads as well; not sure
Scoutmaster of my sons troop told me he bought ART rotors and hawk pads for like $650 I thought he said but don't hang me on this one I am just not sure.
I still think he may have bought Powerslots and Hawks

Do go check them, there is no squeller on the original pads, you find out when the grinding starts. I used NAPA and the smooth and quiet pads, the OEMs went to 80k, now at 150k I am getting ready for pads, I have never warped a rotor in my life and I have had some panic stops. Overall I am very easy on brakes, I tend to coast to the light and time it so I don't have to stop.

I did the PowerSlots/Hawk pads on the fronts, about 10k miles ago. So far, so good. Got 'em through 4wheelparts for about 3 bills, shipped. I tow a 26' toy hauler and she stops real nice.

I changed the fronts on my X a couple of months ago to the Powerslot Cryo'd and Hawk pads. Well worth it IMO.

I went with front Powerslot cryod and Hawks from tire rack. I loved them at first, but it feels like I have warped rotors. I am hoping it is the back rotors, but it doesn't feel like it. Still trying to find a mag mount dial guage to see which rotor is causing it.

I did mine with lifetime pads (Semi Metallic) and rotors from NAPA. AFAIK none of these fancy internet rotors (ART/Powerslot/Hawk/ETC) have lifetime warranty, and are much more expensive then the good NAPA stuff.

Just my 2 cents.

I just ordered from Rich and rotorpros.com. They seem to have a pkg for the TDS guys. Less than 3350 for front drilled/slotted front rotors and pads all the way around. Purty good deal and P/U guys seem to like them
