Had to reregister with a new name (was just Sudsy) as I haven't posted in a while.
Nice to be back, lot of changes around here but i see a lot of the regulars are still around  I owe a lot of these guys a lot of thanks for the quality guidance they've given me in the past.

2000 X, 7.3 Powerstroke, 185K miles, mostly original but with the spring upgrades.

So here's the dilemma - I always said I was going to keep this truck until it rotted away around the engine - that day has come. The middle of the truck underneath is rotted away pretty badly, My best estimate for the body work is over 7K
It also needs new ball joints, fuel pump, turbo rebuild, batteries, tires and a myriad of other items.

I'm looking at a 10K to 12K rehab at a minimum and I'm not sure if that's the way to go.

I see four options.

The most desirable would be to swap the engine into an e-350 extended van. Wife and i always wanted a little class B motor home to buzz around in and my ability to build the interior out is far, far better then my mechanical knowledge (I'm just a hack at mechanics, I can do the basics like brakes and alternators and the like)
How big of an investment would that be to have a shop do it (I can't)

2nd thought - find a high mile gasser in the 5K range and swap the 7.3 into it. Is that possible? What would have to be done besides the engine itself ?

3rd - bite the bullet and spend the cash to do the rebuild

4th - Kill it and part it out. Go buy a new car

I simply do not know enough to be able to clearly make the best choice. I'm hoping you all can help me out here as you all have done so many times in the past.

For that kind of money you can buy another one just like it down south were I live with no rust. I would think about finding 3 or 4 to look at in an area down south and take a trip. Foe 14k I find low milage garage keep 4x4 7.3s all the time and one owner trucks most of the time.

7.3 Excursions ? Or even 7.3 e-350's ?
I can't seem to find a decent one anywhere for under 15 to 19K

Pickup trucks, no problem, but I'm not looking for one of them
Where do you live? I've been entertaining the idea of selling mine.

He must be up north because down south I see them for around 14k with low miles.

Hey Sudsy are you up in north jersey? I've seen a few gassers around here in pretty good shape-I've been contemplating one just for grey interior parts and some electronics with the plan of parting it out afterwards...curious about what color yours is and such...we may be able to work together on this.

Honestly though-I'm not real big on the gas to diesel swap, just seems like lots of little parts that are different and wiring harness issues and computer things that all have to line up...

Your best bet may be to sell your 7.3 here for descent money and invest in a southern truck...

The rust issue is the killer, our Excursion rusted thru same spot. Got a estimate for repair while it was in getting fixed from being hit in the rear . They quoted 3500 and couldn't find a new rocker available so were looking for used(not liking a used rocker) I just held off on getting it done . running board support rusted thru and had to re support that also.

Hate to mention it really but someone could make some serious money by buying rust free Excursions and driving them up north for a slow salt bath death. Same goes for pickup beds (boxes up north). All the brand new takeoffs for welding or other service trucks. Those beds sell up North, I have seen hot shot trailers carrying half a dozen or more going North. I also see caravans of US badged vehicles full of any electronic or household device going south being towed by something similar vehicle. Mexico bound.

I call it migratory recycling and want no part of it.

Someone remind me to never move up north! Yikes! 335k on my dually that has spent plenty of its life off road and in the oil field and not a spot of rust to really even mention!
Find a high mileage southern gasser and just swap the bodies! Assuming your frame and under carriage are worth rehabbing (sand blast the rust and repaint or completely undercoat) a body swap is fairly simple.

Oh please do tell Rebel... Simple? You have to be joking!! Simpler to replace frame but you are giving a customer the same as they got when purchased truck new. A frame that had no primer and a wiff of supper thin nonpaint.

Come on up sometime.
