Hi all my brother has a bone stock 96 cc (4x4,auto,w/200,000 miles). He has 35's with 355 gears and has problems towing. He does want to change gears, so that will be done. Aside from that what should my brother get with $2000 that he can spend to boost performance.

The turbo on his truck is in poor condition also, I took his intake tube off and the impeller fins looked bent (his truck had the bad air box issue, I think the turbo was sandblasted). Can the turbo be rebuilt at home? I have done just about everything on a car/truck myself, and would not be afraid to attempt a rebuild of the turbo if it is possible.

He would actually like to do it for cheaper, but he was considering a Banks Stinger Plus kit for $1800 so that is why I say a budget of $2000. I told him that better parts can be had for possibly cheaper than the Banks kit.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If he had airbox problems then most likely the engine is not long for this world /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif May want to save that $2k.

Rather than just condem the engine on an asumption have a compression check done on it. That will give you an idea what the bottom end is like. If it's all good I'd go for a set of gauges first. Then a down pipe and 4" exhaust and an AFE intake. Get a good large stacked plate style tranny cooler. Then get a decent chip. If the turbo needs rebuild they are pretty easy to do. You can get a rebuild kit and compressor wheel for about $150.00. If he wants to make some better power out of it and thinks he might go with bigger injectors down the road then maybe either leave the exhaust housing alone or get a 1.0 A/R housing. If he doesn't plan on bigger injectors then get a .84 housing. He'll really like the power and driveability increases with those mods and they will pretty much max him out for power unless he goes with bigger injectors. I have 3.55 gears and at first I wanted to change them. Now that I have some power to turn them I don't have a second thought about getting 4.10 gears.

I could get him real close to 350hp to the wheels in a complete packge for the price of that stinger kit, his only problem then is teh tranny and how to keep it alive till he can upgrade it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif

This setup will smoke the stinger plus, with lower EGT's.

save what is leftover and buy some injectors when you have the rest

Check the vendors on this site.
Throw away the pretty brochure, and remember, they did all thier numbers with a 97 split shot truck.

Probably wouldn't be a good idea to sell him a kit with no gauges though to be the same price as the stinger kit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif Also if he is useing it to tow he'd never be able to use all that power with out an intercooler. Now he's getting up in the range he is going to need to spend a LOT more than that initial $2000. Like another $4000 for a tranny, $500-$800 for an intercooler, etc.

I would do the 1" housing, 3" DP, delete cat & muffer, kwik filter, superchip on tow mode, tru-cool trans cooler, ccv mod, guages, hx crossover hose, ebpv gutted, and 99 intercooler. That will be way under 2K and let the engine breathe. Oh, one more thing, man did NOT walk on the moon!

I didn't see Bean say he wouldn't have guages in that setup. In fact he alludes to the contrary when he says "complete package".

Also, does the tow hitch fall off when you reach 350hp if you don't have a cooler?

I did not mean to suggest that he should buy the 340 kit only that its close to the same price as the Stinger kit only with 140hp more.

There are different kits, I could do the same as the stinger for about half as much if ya wanna play apple to oranges.

bigbore take a look at the kit that 94 linked you to. The Stinger plus kit was said to be $1800. Bean said for the same price he could get you 350hp. The kit without the gauges is $1750. Kit with the gauges is $2100. Also you ever try towing a big load with a 350hp truck with no intercooler and a stock turbo? If you have I'm sure you would see what I was talking about. The stuff I described above will get him a good reliable towing package that will way outperform the stock truck he has now and will let the tranny live provided it is in good shape to begin with, and he won't have to worry to much about his EGTs getting out of hand when he uses the power he has gained for towing. If he wants a reliable 350hp it is going to cost him WAY more than $2000.

GTS, I may have misunderstood, but I did not see Bean refer to his 340 kit in his first post. What saw was 350 horsepower. I assumed Bean was saying he would make a deal and throw in a set of stageI injectors ($675) with his stageII ($1300) performance package (total $1975) knocking off $175.

In any event his $1300 stage II will make a stinger plus look silly.

As to how I'm towing, I'm pretty close to what your saying there. I got rid of my SD cooler and 99X pipe and am planning to get a 6.0 and your pipe kit. I can run the temps pretty high, but I run the EVO on Extreme. After truck fest with Tony's tunes we will see. If I dont have to back out of it for a compact car on the passes I can keep the temps below 1100 at 12,000ft and steeeeep with 19,000 GCVW verified by scrapyard scale last week. If I have to back out I cant catch back up without going over 1200. I blame most of this on EVO programming with Babies. I also found out yesterday that on long full throttle pulls I am dropping to [email protected]% duty cycle, so some sort of pump upgrade is in order. I am also going back to Dino oil and getting rid of the 5-40 Rotella syn.
