I'll just tell the wife that since I can't get the right stuff my tranny won't last so I'd better get me a BTS! Ya, that's what I'll tell her.

By the time you do your 3-4 change, you will be ready for an aftermarket trans and you will be able to use the Mercon V(because of the clutches)..Then there wont be any more problems getting fluid.

I am NOT selling Amsoil and do not like their marketing approach but I sure like some or the products. The Torque-Drive transmission fluid should work well for our trucks, so far so good in mine. I have used amsoil universal ATF for many years in all my other vehicles and will continue to do so, but thanks to this site I will not put anything in my tranny that even mentions mercon v. It's like I told my son when he asked me to race, I said sure "I'll race you to 300,000 miles"

I'm using Amsoil & have been for the past 5 years. Still on my original tranny, (touch wood) (touching head as I type) & I tow very heavy & no problems to date. So to me, No Mercon, is No Issue, in my mind. I would say, go to a GOOD quality synthetic & you should have no problems. Royal Purple Max ATF is synthetic MERCON. I just did a fluid change this last weekend and that is what I used.

When you change from dino Mercon to a synthetic like Royal Purple, do you have to flush the system with Royal Purple to get ALL the old Mercon out?

If so, how is this done?

I am not well grounded in transmission service procedures.

The article that stated Ford was dropping Mercon also states that now all vehicles that used Mercon can now use Mercon V. Has Mercon V been reformulated so it doesn't trash the transmissions that are mercon only? I would like to hear what Grampy Jim has to say about this. So now I need to spend 4 grand on a transmission that works fine so I can put in Mercon V. If they don't want to make that's fine but why are they going to prevent others from making it also?

I know the V went through some changes, that why all the sol packs in the explorers were taking a crap as the formulation was changed and it did not work very well.

One smart, smart man ... that's basically how I got my BTS with the "money manager's" total approval. Plus take her along and spend a few extra days at the Bull Shoals / Lead Hill Marina Campground with is really a great place to camp, kick back, and relax. HERE ... that pic was in late April.

LarryM, I have been there(not to get a tranny, vacation) and Brian and company treated me like I did!! He showed me the new shop and the camp ground and almost took me out to lunch, but concrete was on its way for the new shop, so he had to go. We drove my X around for the tour.

Not me. I have a BTS that can handle the MERCON V. You must mean some other Smokey. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

Well I think the reason that they are doing away with it in 2007 is that any 2003 that were purchased late in the year will surely be out of the 3 year warranty by then. So there won't be any warranty repairs when the mercon V trashes the tranny. They can even make a few bucks on the owners that take their vehicles to dealers for replacement transmitions.
So I really doubt there is a change in the fluid.
