Parked my truck after driving it for awhile Wednesday afternoon and turned it off. Came back out 10 minutes later to leave and it would not start. Sounded like the starter was turning, but not engaging the flywheel. So I had it towed to the dealership.
As it turns out my 5 year (is it 150,000km or 160,000km....regardless I'm only at 120,000 as of Weds) warranty expired Thursday.
Just got a call from my dealer's service rep and he says the starter's mounting bolts were broken and the starter was almost broken in two pieces. His best diesel tech says the only time he has seen this problem is from a hydrolocked engine, usually caused by a leaking injector.
They replaced the starter and pressure tested the injectors. The injectors checked out and no leaks were found. So not knowing what might happen and fearing the worst, they attemped to start the engine and lo and behold......it starts right up and is running fine.
Now.....the issue is twofold.
1) What caused the starter to have such a catastrophic break? (I didn't hear a bang or a pop when the problem arose)
2) Sure.....the truck is running fine today. But what if there is a major underlying problem with the engine and they just haven't found it yet. My warranty expired yesterday.
