OK, i just noticed this the other day, and it has NEVER done it before. The driver's side wheel...somewhere...makes a horrible screeching sound. It doesnt do it all the time, and it doesn't matter whether im on the brakes or not, but i DO have to be moving. It doesn't matter what speed. I inched forward while it was doing it, and it actually sounds like something is dragging on the dust shield. There is nothing in there that i can see though, no rocks, no sticks, nothing. Since it doesnt do it all the time, i havent taken it in. If i do, and it is something just dragging, like a rock, then it probably won't be covered under warranty.

I havent taken the wheel off yet. This morning, it did it when i was backing out of the drive, but then going forward it stopped. Last firday, it was only doing it while going forward, but not backing up.

Anyone have ANY clue what i should look for? Can this be related to teh manual hub?

Its a 2005 F-250 4x4.

Thanks for any input.

Im starting to wonder now though. I just don't understand how such a horrible screaming noise can come and go.

It very well could be your brakes. When your brakes get low, they will screech whether you put your foot on them or not.

Warning scraper. Usually the noise will go away if you hit the brake. But not always. I would pull the wheel and double check, easy solution, at least than, you will know instead of guessing.

i know. As i have noted before, i have avoided taking it to the dealer because of the outstanding flash recalls on it. They are going to flash it no matter what, all of them told me this. It doesnt need that, the engine runs fine, its the little round thing with the rubber on it that is giving me problems. I told one dealership i didnt want it flashed, i want the noise found and fixed....the reply was "hmm....sounds like you got a programmer on it." I like the assumption....i hope that isnt the way they diagnose things too.

I still have a couple hundred miles i need to use the truck for before it can go to the dealer. Somewhere in there, ill pull the wheel and look for myself.

brakes shouldnt be a problem, it has 25,000 miles or so on it. its practically brand new.

Your truck is too new, but it's worth keeping in mind that a lot of early 6.0L trucks are losing center bearings on the driveshaft when they get up there in mileage. The first clue is a mysterious, hard-to-locate scrapy-screeching noise that comes and goes. Just something to consider if it turns out not to be brakes.

And by the way, do the newer (larger, on the coil-spring trucks) brakes have the scrapers? Because I don't think my '03 has them.

no that is a warrnty issue unless you have some what tamperd with your vehcle in that area. the problem warrnty will cover that issue it is someting probly simple as you think it is but i would take it in and let a tech look at it.

Jason -- Brakes are a good bet because the problem is intermittent. Wheel bearings would be a constant noise under the same conditions. Better to pull the tires now and check. Replacing pads is a lot cheaper than also replacing rotors because you waited a week to check.

I chased a similar problem on my 2002 for about a month. Turns out the rubber seal that surrounds the driveshaft center bearing was causing the noise. The rubber center bearing "cushion" was slightly contacting the driveshaft where it enters the bearing. It created a horrible screech. I swore it was a something to do with a wheel but it wasn't. Try spraying some white aerosol lithium grease in the rubber bladder around the bearing and see if the noise goes away.

You can TELL a good dealer NO FLASHES,,, I know a couple of owners that have done this. YOU OWN THE TRUCK,,it is your decision. If they wont fix ONLY what you tell them is wrong, (Flashes are not necessary for a brake job,,right>/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif<) I would find another dealer.
