I would like to purchase an '05 or '06 F-250 PSD. I don't like the idea of smogging my diesel truck. So if '05s are exempt, then it's an '05 for me. If the '06s are free from the hassle, or are overwhelmingly superior to the 2005 model, then I may purchase an '06 instead. Your thoughts please!

I don't know if anyone really knows the answer to this question.

The 05's are the same as the 06's (unless you like the Amarillo package)

If you really want to be safe, find a 7.3 engined truck with no cat from the factory.

Yicks, never I hope. That was one of the reasons I got a diesel.

Tier I smog testing = $$, tier II testing = $$$, the future = $$$$$$$$.

California is not testing diesels right now, but given CARB's dislike of diesels, that could change without notice. Who knows.

And when Kalifornia 1st started testing gas vehicles in the 60's they went all the way back to the mid 50's. At 1st it was at the time of sale. Then later they went to current setup.

If they did test diesels i would either put full exhuast and kitty and ditch them that night or get one of those electric switches that can dump exhaust out before all the emmisions, their pretty cool. I've heard you can run certain fuel(bio, kerosense) but i dont think that would change much and sure wouldnt try it. I have an 81 cali vette and it was so smoged when i got it i had to pull parts like crazy. 190 HP wasnt for me, now 350 is.

What do you mean by " smogging " diesels ??? It seems the forces to be are altering fuels as the means to reduce NOX emmissions, not adding parts to the vehicles or fees to test your machine. Perhaps a letter asking for clarification should be sent to your DOT ??? If you want more power, then by all means chip the beast and risk voiding your warranty.

If they do, just get 100% bio the tank of the test (although if you haven't run it or smaller percentantages first be prepared to change the fuel filter). Bio has far, far less emmissions, and my guess is that even chipped or running rough you would pass easily.

California already has requirements for fleet vehicles (business owned) that is two or more vehicles (diesels) owned by same company, it's a smoke test (opacity)and the cost last time was around $75.00 per vehicle. With the way the state and local gov't need money and how the dictators in this state are (the anti's) we may see something soon on all diesels. After all, this is California...............

Thanks a lot to all that responded. Looks like my son may have "done good" by purchasing a 7.3 PSD with no Cat.
Since there is no clear answer to the question, I will try to save a few bucks by getting the '05 ... unless there is overwhelming ...
I am looking around the Orange County (CA) area for B-20, also B-100.
Back to lurking here at THEDIESELSTOP! Thank you.

smog

I contacted the dmv the other day to ask that same question, because I was thinking about buying a ford with a 12v in it, and someone said there could be an issue with an older engine in a newer truck when they start to smog them.
The lady I spoke with said that they wont be smogging them in for years and that it would only pertain to trucks that come out the year they start and after.
Seemed to know the subject.
