Hello. I LOVE THIS SITE. Really helped me in the two weeks I have owned this truck. Thanks to all.

I just recently bought this 1999 F350 7.3L diesel and I had problems. It has like 180,000 miles and I needed to replacethe valve cover gaskets and wiring harness. It is running perfect. I have taken the truck to GAW in Miami because I am still getting an IDM code. They are telling me that I might need to replace the IDM. I have looked in the Haynes F350 repair manual and can not find anything on the IDM in the manual? Where is the IDM? GAW wants to cahrge me close to 900.00 to replace the IDM. I called the dealer and with my discount, I get it for 570.00. I refuse to pay 330.00 to install this. Can I do it myself? How hard is it to replace and where can I find it?

What Trapper said about the IDM location. It's just behind the "F350" emblem on your fender, mounted to the front of the body. Pull the fender liner loose.

BUT....

What code are you getting while still having it run good? My bet is that it's a wiring issue. Check where the main engine harness goes across the driver's side valve cover for rubbed off insulation. A bit of tape there is a LOT cheaper than replacing an IDM that you probably don't need and may not fix the problem.

Make sure you run the injector buzz test (with a capable scan tool) to get all the codes from the IDM. The P1316 is just a "reminder" to look further.

IDM = injector driver module. In other words, it's a computer that controls the fuel injectors. And it's a rare event for the IDM to need replacing.

The usual suspect with trouble codes mentioning the IDM is the wiring harness between the IDM and the injectors. The wiring goes under the valve cover (UVC) and is held in place by little retainers - sorta like sophisticated paper clips. A common problem is that one or more of those UVC retainers shorts out. It's fairly easy to replace the retainers. Basically get other stuff out of the way, then remove the valve cover.

The part number for a bag of 3 retainers is 2C3Z-14A163-AB.
