GearVendors is the only place that can or will repair the trans. They wont sell any parts either. I'm sure you could buy the bearings at any bearing mart but anything else probably not. These units are manufactored in England and have been used since the 50"s on many sportscars from England like the Austin Healeys. Try Moss Motors in Goleta California. Maybe they might have some parts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

That's really not what I wanted to hear /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Single-source for parts is lousy.

A couple of weeks ago, I was servicing a GV in a 70's F250 w/C6, 460, 2wd, and it had what to me looks like an older GV (compared to Mel's here). It had a rectangular sump plate, and when I removed it, it had a small filter above it, similar to a miniature AT filter.

She had just bought the truck a couple of months earlier, didn't know anything about the GV other than the added switch which she would leave in "autoshift" or whatever it was called, but she did have the GV manual in the glovebox. Wish I'd photocopied it. We were trying to determine what type of lubricant it requires (turns out to be Dexron II), but as a side note it also recommended an OCI of 12k miles.

The oil that came out of that GV was pretty much black. It didn't smell bad so I assume it was suspended clutch material. I sprayed a half-can of brake cleaner all over inside and then ran some clean oil through the fill hole with the sump still off, before buttoning it all back up and refilling.

So, there are at least two different versions of the GV for C6. Anybody have any other GV knowledge to contribute?

Yes. GV made an early and late model. The early "j" model parts are not offered or GV can't repair them. I forgot what it was. The newer model is the "P" model. Way better electronics and such. Give them a call. They are in El Cohon Ca. and have a 1-800 toll free number plus a web site....

Correction:

These units are manufactored under license from England. I'm pretty sure GV makes them in California. I wouldn't bother emailing them. Just call. Ask for tech support. They are very friendly to talk to.

Mel... These units that I know of are called Leacock De Normanville. overdrives and were common on the Austin Healey from about 1955 till 1967. Same units as GV now. Yes, GV may make them here but they are an English design and were from England. Moss Motors may have some bearing or friction parts. I had 11 Austin Healeys many years ago from the 1955 La Mans style up to the early 1963 first year rollup windows and the sporty dash. A collecter in New Zealand has that one now. Thats the car I would really want back. I even had a 1955 with a 283 Vet motor in with flaired fwnders. Most thought it was a 1965 Cobra. It ran like ... Well it flat could move down the road. Plenty-o-fun too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Are the old Laycock "j" types worth anything? They have the same mounting pattern as the "p" so the adapters must work. I don't think GV will take them on trade but maybe spare parts? Cone clutch maybe? I have spotted a few on old diesel volvo's at the u-pulls. They go for tranny price...$100 with volvo adapter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

OK, I found a pic of the style I've worked on, with a sump plate. It's a pic in an eBay auction, but I stole this picture. This, I assume, is the older Model J?

Awhile back I was looking at a gear vendors that needed rebuilding and the guy wanted $600 for it. I called gear vendors and gave them the serial #--he told me it was a J type and would not hold up behind a diesel--but--I could send them the unit and get an upgrade to the P unit + rebuild [$600] + adapter for abt. $1400. Sooo if you can pick them up for $100 you can have a GV for $1500 ---thats a deal! ---Dennis
