just wondering why everyone wants a cummins other than the obvious reasons of it being a great moter. why not use a dt466, i thought you could get them to the 1000 hp mark also.
would the current 530 or b codes not work in a 466. and yes it is bigger and harder to work on but look at the bright side it is more original. and would our computers and all the other electronics be a direct swap with only tuning differences. i know little about this motor other than it is stronger and bigger than the 444 that is why i am asking. and i have seen pics of like an '86 with a 532 detriot now that was sweet.
Tractor pullers get insane power out of a DT466. I'd expect it to be more reliable at any power level than the 5.9 Cummins, but my guess is that building one up and installing it will cost more in both time and $$$ than a Cummins swap, for no other reason than that the Cummins swap has been done a lot more than the DT466 swap.
I think it's because there are knows limits of the 7.3 and so far it looks like 730 is top dog for HP in a 7.3 cale at BTS.
The cummins surpasses that number with ease with 800,900 and even 1100 on fuel only no juice of any kind. I think maddog has figured out how to make a 1100 HP daily driver yikes. My guess is that if a 7.3 ever hit 900 HP it will explode into pieces where the inline 6 design is strong as hell. Just look at the size of the cummins rods they are twice the size as 7.3 or dmax rods just massive.
It's like a mustang which everyone is doing a mustang drag car since it's already known that X-amount of $ = X-amount of HP no questions asked and no mystery it's all about how much you want to spend. That's why my brother went in on a 7 second mustang it's easy to do just like a cummins easy to do.
Nobody can offer an 800HP 7.3 or 6.0 at this point it just doesn't exist or probably wouldn't last very long as of this moment /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I should have said on fuel only not a 300 shot of nitrous and how many engines have you went through again? ok that's what I thought.
I think you missed the point greg and how can one argue against a cummins swap or the fact nobody can find 800hp even with a ton of nitrous at this point and if you're going through engines like a change of underwear at 758hp just think what happens at 800+ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif
So how does a 800hp 7.3 hold up nobody knows or how about a 900hp 7.3 or a 1000hp 7.3 nobody knows but we do know that a 700hp 7.3 doesn't fair too well.
I was only giving the OP some reasons that a cummins swap was a consideration or why anyone would want one. I bet a 700hp cummins will hold up better than a 700hp 7.3 it's just a stronger design end of story.
The reason I haven't gone to the darkside is I like something that is out of the ordinary or different like a 700hp daily driver that is dependable and on fuel only.
I burnt a piston in that 758 hp motor. 700+ hp Cummins burn/melt pistons everyday /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
People need to face the facts.........all bets are off when over 500 hp regardless of what brand.
Or, you can continue to believe the crap spewed by a bunch of 300 hp truck owners about how great this or that brand is /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I'll bet noone has ever seen you in one of those /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
As for brand that sounds like the truck brand which ford is the best truck on the market period. How can anyone argue about engine design when the cummins has been on top for eternity and the Dmax is second and we've been last.
I wouldn't own a dodge or chevy and have passed up some killer deals on them. We have a GMC dealership down the road from the pizzeria and the owner of the dealership made me an offer on an 07 one ton dually that I almost had to take but couldn't do it I don't like chevy or dodge.
The only thing the other brands can argue is engine when it comes to trucks because the rest of the truck they know who is #1 so they argue engines which none of the big 3 make their own engine anyway so what is there to argue about but engines.
Ever own an inline 6 engine greg? I've had several that I ran to death and they just kept on running until I sold them. So you're saying the cummins isn't stronger then? and let's just say for the sake of argument they are then what good does second or third place do for the 7.3? I think 99% of the people on this site will agree that an inline 6 design is stronger and it's not even up for discussion which one makes more power. I don't want to go to the darkside because it's more fun trying to do something that hasn't been done or is out of the ordinary. How many guys turn their head or say wow to an 8 or 900hp cummins it's been done already.

Feel free to share your wealth of knowledge on high hp diesels when you actually have one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Until then, stick to commenting on powder coating parts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Ah the standard statement when someone can't come up with an intelligent arguement as if I need a truck running to see that nobody has made 800hp in a 7.3 or do I need a high HP truck to know that you are a jackass.
Last time I checked nobody put you in charge or made you spokesman for high HP trucks captain nitrous /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Do you even remember what the OP was asking? or did you decide to take this thread personally it looks like somebody needs a hug or thicker skin.

I spend my time with more people with 700+ hp Cummins than the number of 700+ hp trucks you have ever even just taken a peak at/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
Again, when you have some experience, talk about it. Until then... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
