I am thinking about trading in my 2005 F350 lariat, crewcab, dually 4X4.
It has the 6.0 PSD and only has 21,000 miles on it. I am just tired of having such a big truck to tow my fifthwheel camper. I don't even really enjoy driving it due to its size. I haven't had many problems other than a few leaks but I hate driving down the highway on vacation wondering if and when the 6.0 is going to break down. So, I went to my local dealer today and talked about oredering a F350 Lariat crewcab, shortbed V10 with 4.30 gears. They advised me that if a few years down the road I wanted to trade the truck back in, they would give me less than what they would for a 5.4 V8 inthe same truck. They said that they have had V10's that sat on there lot for years and were de-badged and sent to the action. So, why are people so scared of the V10?

Because of it's appetite for fuel(gasoline). We have a dually v10 at work and it gets 6MPG at 60MPH towing the little BobCat skidsteer.

My dad drives a 2008 F550 V10 duallie standard cab for work; it's really a bucket truck (he's the city repairman). It gets less than 5 MPG, and he doesn't tow with it. If you haven't driven gasoline powered trucks lately, you may want to reconsider your desire to switch over. The lack of fuel economy will eat you alive.

Find a new dealer. Plain and simple. I've been living this diesel vs. gas deal for years now, and even my dealer who steered me away from the V-10 for years is now ordering them when they used to never order them ata ll. Diesels still outumber the gassers in sales, but the people buying diesels now are more of the "need" people rather than the "want" people because of the market and economy.

In the same vein, my specific dealer says they order many 5.4L trucks in crew cabs today and they leave the lot as soon as they get them. That tells me they are people who need a larger truck without diesel or the V-10 fuel appetite, plow trucks, or people who want a large Superduty, but think they are saving by driving the 5.4L. To me, the fuel sucking diesels of today are either vehicles for someone who really needs it to haul, puts on high mileage (or extremely low), or someone who just has the money to blow away.

I'd not be scared of the V-10 today - especially with diesel fuel prices. ALOT of gas can be bought for the $8,000 diesel motor adder, and the value of good used diesels is in the tank along with all other trucks today. I'd rather gamble having the $8,000 in my pocket a few years from now than not. I think at $1.00 a gallon more for diesel, you'll find the fuel costs for each truck (gas vs. diesel) will cost close to the same over the same term... And, the maintenance of the V-10 is far cheaper than the diesel if you take your trucks in to the dealer for service.

I'll bet in 3-4 years if you buy a V-10, you won't have any problem at all finding a buyer. As far as mileage goes, if you get the V-10 with the 4.33 gears you can pull with the best of them. My V-10 with 4.10, towing heavy has never gotten below 9.0 mpg. Solo I get 11.5-12 depending on my foot. My wife has a Lincoln LT (fancy F-150) with the 5.4 and 3.73 rear and it gets 19-20 mpg with a Superchip in the "middle" setting, nothing else, just the chip. Sounds like you don't use it much for towing. I would consider the V-10 with the standard 4.10 rear for an all around decent mileage and good towing as well. If you tow REAL heavy, like a monster 5th wheel, then get the 4.33's.

The fifthwheel I tow is roughly 11,000#'s. I tow it 3 or 4 times a years, usually within 200 miles of my house. When I go on long trips, its usually to bike week and then I am towing a 7X16 enclosed trailer weighing approx. 6,000#'s. I think if I went back to single rear wheels, I would drive it more. I commute 50 miles daily to work and my wife commutes 10 miles daily. I could take her truck and she could drive the Ford if I needed to. Right now, it would be a gamble letting her drive a crewcab dually through the city streets.

I pulled a Carriage 40' 3 axle (a real tank) with my single axle F-250 and single axle F-350 and didn't feel scared except for once on a snowy road in Wyoming. I doubt a duelly would have helped in that situation. Sounds like to me you'd love the 2008/2009 F-250 V-10 SW with the Lariat package. Just don't let your wife drive it. :nono:
